Collecting My 997S Tomorrow.....

Ian W

New member
Hi everyone,

Finally taken the decision to leave the 996s behind and change to a 997S! I'm like a kid on Xmas 'eve at the moment as I'm not collecting the car until tomorrow! Can't wait. And my PCGB membership arrived this morning too - good omen?

I'm looking forward to being as active a contibutor to this register as I hope I was on the 996 forum.

Regards

Excellent!.... There's nothing like the anticipation of collecting a new car. It's almost an anti climax when you arrive & the keys are handed over.
Make sure you post some pictures & spec etc.[:)]

Problem is - too easy to get hooked on that feeling of collecting a new car! Bit like young love.

Well done and enjoy, look forward to seeing some pics

You're right - and it's made worse by not having any Porsche for the last couple of weeks since my 996 sold. 7 year old Mondeos are fine but.....!!

Hi - thanks for asking. Unfortunately, delivery of the car has been delayed until next Monday, 30th April due to delayed paperwork! [>:] The car is silver / black with a fairly basic spec - a template to add to if you like!

Planned additions are going to be a full Europipe exhaust http://www.europipe.be/1024.html / Techart TypeIII fixed rear wing and a SpeedArt GT front PU (just like the car in the car in the attached pic). I'm undecided on the X-51 for now but may go that route later.

Hi Ian. I'm interested in your proposed Europipe exhaust. My 997S has the standard system because I thought the PSE too noisy, no power increase and I didn't want a noise that you switched on and off. The Europipe site says there is no drone and the sound in the video is superb. Have you heard this 'live'?

Glad its not just me that thinks PSE is 'too loud' !

Speed needs to be enjoyed responsibly and stealthily these days me thinks.

Ian,

Your collection is 12 days ahead of mine, also a 997 C2S (Meteor Gray / Black leather). Have fun and enjoy! [:D]

I haven't heard this one live as yet, unfortunately. The Americans swear by Europipe - you'll find a lot of references to them on Rennlist - but they don't seem to have much of a presence in the UK. The build quality and sound of the systems are the main things that everyone seems to rave over. The video on the Europipe site would suggest it sounds awesome but quite loud. The ideal performance exhaust IMHO - especially if it's a non-switchable one - is one that quietens down when you want to take it easy but goes loud and sweet at high rpms / full throttle.

Hi again,

My car finally arrived yesterday and I've driven it for a couple of hundred miles (partly business, partly 'coz it was the best way to spend a couple of hours)!! Hope you don't mind, but here are my first impressions of 997S. Now it's outside my house, I'm just starting to take in how different the shape is from the 996. So subtle, yet so noticeable once you start to look closely. 997 is a really good looking car! But OMG what a difference otherwise! The shape's similar but EVERYTHING else is a different car!

Good points: Punchier, far more 'planted', handling (awesome) build quality from a different millennium, looks (yeah, I know, it's very subjective) interior. Bad points: sounds like a hoover, gearbox is appalling compared to the 'click, clack' rifle-bolt, ultra-positive 996 'box. This 'box feels like any Jap import - yuk! Clutch - VERY heavy (probably needs replacing so I'll report back). This car also lacks that wonderfully raw feeling that my old 996 had. (With PSE's, no PSM and uprated dampers , mine mightn't have been typical)!

Reaction so far? Much better all-round car (it's my daily driver) subjectively quicker (a lot of this is down to markedly shorter gearing though) much better around the twisty stuff but lacks some of the character that makes a 911 drive 'to-die-for' and that my loud and fidgety (but slower and old-fashioned by comparison) 996 provided in spades! (I actually miss my 996 in some ways)!!

I'm now looking at the various sports exhaust options, in particular Europipe and AWE. I think that once 'tweaked' to remove the politically-correct, Euro-compromises forced on the factory spec, this will very easily be the best 911 I've owned.

Ian, I'm please your somewhat so far enjoying the new car.
In comparison I haven't looked back to my 996 in any way at all. I'm not saying I didn't have a fantastic time in my previous car (turbo cab) I agree with your comments on how planted the 997 feels and how it looks.
I'm still amazed how much better the 997 gear selector feels in comparison.
I can't comment on the clutch as I have read that the Turbo for whatever reason seems lighter than the other models ..?

Hopefully with time you may find that bit of "to-die-for" your searching for.. I know I have....[;)]

PS don't worry the X51 brigade will be along shortly telling you what is missing [;)] :ROFLMAO:

Ian glad your enjoying your new car - they are fabulous:ROFLMAO:

To take the proffreed bait from Gary[8|] for yet more perforamnce and even more mid range grunt as well as the sports exhaust have a look at the x51 powerup grade which can be done aftermarket (see Yves blog on the powerkit)[:D]

This gives a real punch to mid range acceleration, sounds great and gives a little bit ont he top speed for a theorhetical 300kph top speed which is a nice round number[:-][:-]
