Common fault or not?

Anybody got any ideas please???

Just been out to start her up - roof already down for enjoying the spring like weather and she won't start!

I get the sound of 50 machine guns 'rat a tat tatting' ! but the engine doesn't turn. I've checked the battery connections, tried to shove her to dislodge the starter motor and checked any obvious loose connections but to no avail.

Any thoughts?

Crawl under there and whack the starter motor with a large spanner, not very scientific but it can work. If the starter proves to be toast rebuild it don't buy another one.
 
Wayne, how long ago did you last use the car/give it a good run to charge the battery?

I wouldn't try that until you have checked that your battery isn't flat [:D]

Battery is flat. The 'rat tat ta tat' is the give away. Common problem if the car is left for a few weeks.
 
Hi All,

Thanks for the comments on this. I'm in work today so not had a chance to check if it's the battery. I'll hook her up to some jump leads tonight and see what happens!

Careful with jump leads I read somewhere that this option could bugger up your electronics..... better to charge or by a new battery.... (think I read that on this forum).
 
How old is the extg. battery? If over four years, there's your answer.....

Just change the battery -my 964 did the same.

And then check you're not getting an earth leakage while it's parked up.
 
Melv, Thanks for your comments, battery is about 7 years old so it does seem to be the main suspect !

In fact all lines of enquiry on this problem on this forum seems to point to the battery - just wish I could go home now and plonk a new battery on her.

Maybe a couple of days before I get a chance to do it but thanks again to all, I'll let you know.
 
Depending how long you store the car between drives you might want to get a battery maintainer. I used to have exactly the same problem, even with a new battery, where it would go flat if the car was left for a month without being driven.

There are a number of threads on the forum regarding maintainers, battery problems, how to test if your car is using too much current when turned off, etc. If you do a search using the term 'drain' on the 993 forum you'll get lots of info.

The following is one of Maurice's replies on this subject

"Depending whether left locked and immobilised or not, 993s will drain a battery in 2 weeks or so. There are also a number of potential sources of extra drain - after-market alarms is top of the list. Then there's interior/boot/engine compartment lights not switching off, dodgy ICE installations etc etc.

The only way to check out whether you're 'normal' or not is to measure the current drain. You need an ammeter (Digital Multi Meter on the 10 amps range) in series with the battery, reading should be much < 100mA. Don't forget to trip the boot latch to shut the light off. If your reading is higher, you need to isolate the bad circuit by pulling fuses until the load disappears ............

Your 76 Amp/Hr battery should last around 30 days at 100 mA in prime condition, but not fit for starting duties after a couple of weeks.
