Competition suspension advice

Morning gents, I'm after some suspension advice...

I am rally prepping my early 944 and am now considering 'investing' in some (more) decent dampers and springs.

I made the classic mistake of trying to save a few quid by buying used. I picked up from a classified ad on here a full set of Koni Yellow adjustables and springs. This was three months ago and I only got round to fitting them yesterday. That was a big mistake. The springs were not Koni items but a set of knackered standard springs that had a quarter link cut out of them with an angle grinder. Bad. Worse still was they were cut both top and bottom meaning there wasn't a return link either end! The rear dampers were ok but with worn bushes and the front dampers are a mess - internal bushes shot. Money down the drain.

Anyway, nothing I can do about it now as I'm leaving for the first rally tomorrow morning.

The next big rally is early December for LeJog. I want this all sorted by then.

What I'm looking for is something like this:

Springs - drop of about 20mm on the front, rear torsion bar adjusted accordingly.
Dampers - a combination of fast road and rally damping.

The whole car has been rebushed with Powerflex Purple so it is ready for some decent suspension.

Budget is not set in stone but not unlimited.

And ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Ay up, just read you profile right up in 911 & Porsche World, recognized it as you due to the expoding 4x4. Sounds like you have an interesting car there. Who did your sill repair work for you?

Looks like they didn't want to write about the exploding Range Rover!

The chap who did the metalwork on my DS did the quick and dirty repairs on the sills. I haven't gone the full hog yet as I'm considering having the whole thing seam welded in the new year. The car will be taken apart again after LeJog in December and I'll have a think, cash depending, on what to do with it.

Its got to be GAZ Ben. Theyre this century's Leda (except that they dont keep going bust and they will rebuild their own shocks in five years time).

They will also rebuild proper Ledas too, which has pleased a couple of other members who I have told.

Yes, ring up and speak to their technical man. Ive spent the last hour trying to recall his name, but cant, sorry. Neil will know and comment if he sees this, no doubt.

I shouldnt be sat looking through GAZ catalogues, but I am and its frustrating. Their old catalogue was terrible but new fitment lists dont offer every option. For example they only list a 'fast road' kit for the 924, but itll fit series one 944s too.

This is why its best to speak to their technical man even if you have to order elsewhere. Dampertech are a good firm to order from as they can fine tune your spring requirements etc and they understand what you need, which is far better than ordering off a drop shipping reseller.

I still cant remember the fellows name; although his surname may be King. David King? Martin King? Something similar Im sure...

Dave Lyons, Simon. I may have the spelling wrong but if one was to phone em up and ask for that name if you are lucky you will get to speak to the man himself. I tried a handful of times but never got through.

BTW The GAZ struts seem to be very strong in terms of metal work but have had a rep for failing seals etc. amongst some on the club championship. My front left as an example was rebuilt 3 times in as many months last year (seals, then weld on bottom failed, then seal up top popped out), its been fine since and the rears have always been perfect so its a roll the dice job.

Also look at Proflex ISTR, a few racers used them several years back on 944/968 cars and they have solid rep in rallying to boot. Will be much more expensive than GAZ though.
