Con Air at the controls.....

Suffering from the typical partially dead 7 segment display on the air con controller on my 996 C2 98.

So I've picked up a used unit, including a bezel - and have absolutely no idea how to get the old one out! Is it just a snap fit you can prize off, or do I need special tools?

I'll do it myself if its the former - if its the latter, its in for a service in a few weeks, I suppose I can get it doen then.

Any guidance appreciated.

Hey Jules

It's pretty easy to get out - I just had to fit a new cup holder in my 996 and in doing so I had to remove all that part of the dash. But it came out quite easily.

To do it properly you need to prise the 'horseshoe' piece (the surrounding fascia) of the dash off. To do that without causing damage you will need some kind of trim removal tools. I bought this cheap set from Amazon which did the trick nicely. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00OCS3KEE?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00

Then remove the small bezel around the aircon component and unscrew it from the frame. There are two bracket-type things that attach to the sides of the unit which will fall inside - so be careful not to let them drop into any difficult to retrieve places.

Unplug the unit and refit in reverse!

Hope that helps ;)

I don't think you'll need to take the 'horseshoe' off if you are only removing the aircon panel. The surrounding bezel (4) just pulls off, and as Paul says, just undo the screws (5) and pull the panel (2) and brackets (6) out.

It is possible to do it like that but then it's more difficult to refit the new unit with the horseshoe in place as it's those two brackets (6) that are very fiddly to relocate properly otherwise. With the horseshoe off you can access the sides of the unit more easily.

You'll see what I mean when you start doing it... ;)

How funny! I had to do this job myself this morning on a 996 Turbo. Literally prize off the bezel, undo the 2 x T20 torque screws and then gently prize out the ac unit by pulling gently left to right. Pop out unit, undo the 2 wiring loom plugs to the back (these can only fit in the correct holes so you don't even have to mark where they have come from). Then fit new one and job done! Took time wise literally 5 minutes from start to finish. Good Luck and I hope that helps.
