Confused New Owner

Hi I'm now the proud owner of a Boxster 981 and this is my first post, so be gentle with me. After having MX5's, Z4's and older MG's used mostly to tour Europe I have recently joined the club and I confess I'm a little confused as I don't really understand the differences between the 3 (?) Boxster models. Perhaps someone could enlighten me? Also why isn't the Boxster section split into the various models like the 911 marques etc. are? Finally, why is it so quiet on here? Perhaps everybody's out driving?

The original car is the 986 followed by the 987. They share a fair number of parts with the equivalent 911s of that era; the 996 and 997

The 981 shares less with the 911 as finances no doubt allowed Porsche to be a bit more radical. Soon the model will become the 718 with smaller, more efficient engines

I predict in years to come, your 981 will be more desirable than later 718s

No need to be confused. It's just model progression as already said the first incarnation were 986 then 987 gen 1 &2 then 981 next will be the 718 they are all Boxsters.
You get similar with the Cayman 987 Gen1 & 2 then 981 .
It's just model progression.
The PCGB will give you event news and what's going on its a bit more refined than say Pistonheads site where there's more banter sometimes not all good each to there own.

which 3 ?, model progression there have been many more than 3 ! or current cars for sale of which there are 2 ?

the 981 which you own ,you now cannot buy you got a 2.7 engine a 3.4 and the 3.8

in the new 718 you get 2 power levels atm with I am sure a GTS to follow and then a Spyder.

But today all you can order are 2 718 models, the standard car and the S model. one is the 2.0l 300hp one and the S is the 2.5l 350hp model.

as for history the car started life in 1996 and there have been over 20 models easy sharing 7 body shapes 2 of those based on the main 5 models.

 
who's to say what he means until he posts back as the "3" models can mean anything atm, model years or model designation. as I go by the latter when some one says "what model" you say S or Spyder as an example. You would say "I own an Cayman R" you would not state "I own a 987.2"

As I said there have been 7 Boxster shapes with >20 models in those shapes based round the 5 major types progressions over the last 20 years.

atm you can only buy 1 shape/type (the 718) in 2 models. the S and the non S

Porsche tend to use type numbers and then model designation.
 
It seems I mean "type" numbers i.e. 986, 967, 981. I think I understand the differing engines and power output from each and now also understand (I think) the Spyder model. Are all parts inter-changeable across the types, I think not but not many sites Porsche web sites seem to give the option for the 981 type?
Would it help mere beginners like me to have a TYPE designation within the Boxster forum?


 
most parts don't interchange over types as each types tend to have a new engine design, interior, wheels, brakes and chassis.

Indeed there is many variants within the Boxster range.
If you have a specific question about your model post it up I am sure there's a lot of people that can answer you.

PS if it's the History of the Boxster you need to know from start to almost present day I would suggest maybe buying a book so you are more informed i am sure it would make for good reading.

Well I have one of the last 918's and it is perfect in every respect. Fast enough to lose my licence - sporty with the PDK and "sports +" and sounds great with the sport exhaust and twin tail pipes. I also think it is the best looking Boxster. I am sure the new 718 with the 4 cylinder turbo engine is great and with a turbo the after market chipping chaps will be in overdrive ( I chipped my TT and the result was fearsome). However the sound of the flat 6 cannot be beaten in my book. I drive my car every day and recently have had the roof down. I don't really hurry as I love driving it. If I need to "get along" it does that easily. I will now go and take my tablets ;-)
