Congestion charge

Hi everyone
This may not be the right place to post this, but as it will effect a lot of 993 owners what are your thoughts on Ken Livingstones proposed hike on congestion charges in London, from £8 to £25 later this year for cars pre March 2001 with engines above 3ltr. I'm pleased Porsche Cars GB have launched a complaint and threat to go for a judicial review if Ken does not see fit to reply to their letter to him. Please correct me if i have misinterpreted this news
Your thoughts
Regards Steve B

My 993 will not be used in London during CC hours. I will use it outside those hours when it produces just as many emissions as it would during those hours. Within CC hours I will instead be using a Chelsea Tractor which falls into emissions band F, thus entitling me to drive it in London with the benefit of a 90% residents discount. Makes perfect sense doesn't it.

Despite the humour, sadly that will not work. Red Ken is also removing the 90% discount. []

But is this the case across the board, or just for the cars in band G? Taking the resident's discount away for everyone seems like a very easy way to alienate a lot of your voters if of course there any left stupid enough to vote for you in the first place!

£25 is chargeable if:

Your car is pre-2001 and over 3000cc
Your car is 2001 or newer and emits more than 225 CO2s

How do I know this? Both my cars (993 and Audi A6) fall into each of the above groups, yet neither is in group G!

Unfortunately that is the case. No discounts for residents whatsoever. TFL estimate only a trace 2% will qualify if that for any type of discount. A lot of confusion surrounding this subject too. & A rumour that that CC Area will have a 24/7 barrier lashed onto it too"¦ so no such thing as an "outside of hours" drive into the capital.
This whole thing basically infringes our fundamental human rights, this challenges our "˜freedom of choice' in a way. Targeting, alienating and imposing a levy on one sect of society indiscriminately.
London should take him to court on the grounds of crimes against humanity. - For increasing 02 emissions by reducing the speed of traffic in the Capital, as TFL control the traffic lights etc"¦ this stop, start, stopping nonsense is ridiculous and more harmful. I need to protect the air I breath by getting rid of Ken.

As a matter of interest - how much rubbish do the London busses, the black cabs and the mini cabs push out each day. Not to mention all the delivery vans in the area as well?

"Lots" would be my guess. Sorry for the non-scientific answer, but I think a way forward must be to reduce the ridiculous number of buses in cental London, especially the notorious lethal pedestrian scything bendy buses.

Have logged my protest []

I'm all for doing my bit to avoid further global warming, but this is just another Rip-Off Britain venture, this time from Red Ken. []

Hi All

At least Porsche are doing something about this issue. Lets hope that they are followed by other manufacturers.
Porsche is not alone in producing higher co2 emission cars, many "ordinary" cars have been pulled into Ken Livingston`s revenue raising scam.
I believe we all have concerns for the environment, but it will take time to resolve the problems, new car manufacture is making great strides in making cars more suited to modern needs and this does include Porsche, who lead the world in innovative thinking.
We should be pleased that "our manufactuer" is making a stand against such an ill thought out and anti social plan.
Sadly if you are rich then you will pay to play. Come on Ken "what about the workers" thats what I say.( see Peter Sellars)( can`t remenber the film)

As was said before, lets keep this thread on a decent level

Have fun

I think it'll happen and (as a lawyer, though not my field) I suspect legal challenges will fail. whilst unfair and stupid on an individual and personal level its about sending a message and influencing manufacturers long term, which particularly if other cities follow suit it will do.

Because I can't bear to commute I have a flat in working distance of work and I drive my 993 in on Monday and out on Friday, it living in a secure garage during the week and goes nowhere. Without residents discount the costs start looking stupid, so I'm going the whole hog - buy whatever the best thing is that gets full exemption (favourite so far seems a polo 1.4 TDI if I have the rules right), and park it on the street with residents parking. Plus I keep the mileage down on the 993 (now just touching 50000) which stays at home and becomes a weekends only car. With what I save in garaging, fuel, insurance and wear and tear the polo pays for itself in under two years. My oldest daughter will then be 18 and she can have it as a first car. I doubt it will make any material difference to my journey time (to Chichester) but I'll miss the 20- 30 great drives a year I get when the road south of Petworth is clear ( a road designed for a 911 if only someone could do something about the wildlife hazard, espacially deer), or better still the half dozen or so times when you come across someone else with a decent machine who wants to play, knows how to drive, but isn't a dangerous lunatic.

such is progress []
