Considering an 86 944.....

Hi all,

Since I was a kid I have loved the Porsche 944, while it may no have been a dream car, it was certainly on my list of must haves :). Now, after owning several high power Japanses sports cars (Skyline, Evo, VR4) I am back to wanting a 944.

I have seen one for sale (Pics attached), and, am rather smitten by it, however, it is a 3sp auto, and, has covered 105,000 miles, are there any great pitfalls with this transmission?

Thanks,

Jake

Thats a dog's dinner: Id avoid it unless its going for about £500. If theyre original, the sills and rear valance can still be carried off, as long as the rest of the car is correct for the period too. This isnt. Porsche did still sell a few series two cars with these parts, but they didnt look right. This looks very, very wrong with the rear bridge spoiler and the poorly fitting later style wheels. If you returned to a rubber spoiler and fitted '86 dials or Fuchs wheels then itd look better (on the outside). Then youd only need to sort of the fucking appaling interior. Stupid charvered-up steering wheel (the worst part, I'll concede) and aftermarket carpet set, along with seats from who-knows-what? Im guessing that theyre 911 three way comfort seats? The rears wont match though so theyll probably be in the original fabric, as the door cards are. The series two automatic is a little better than the AUDI 200 transaxle fitted to the series one cars, but its still sh*te. Itd be alright if the rest of the car was clean.....

If it was cheap Id buy it and break it..........

I promise not to. The best advice that I can give the OP though, is to avoid this car, unless it is very, very cheap (and avoid it then too, unless you know beyond doubt that it is mechanically and structurally good). Its not likely to be though, because cars bodged up like this are seldom well cared for in the way that matters.

Blimey that doesn't look a great example of the breed [:'(]

As Simon said theres plenty wrong with it from an appearance point of view (the wrong offset wheels being the worst for me as it does suggest total ignorance rather than simple bad taste). Would also say avoid the auto box out of the simple principle that 3 speed slush box in a sportscar isn't exactly the happiest of combinations.

Loads out there for not a huge amount of money that are far better propositions imho.

those side skirts, coloured spoiler and steering wheel look pretty awful, I'd keep looking......

The rubber rubbing strips been painted too, that wont be durable: suggesting a spam-up. I wonder whats under the (probably recently added) sills?
