Considering an upgrade to a 964

Hi Guys,

I am a member of the 944 community but I an hankering for a move to a 911 and the 964 looks like a nice upgrade. I havent made my mind up yet so I thought I would talk to you first.

I dont know a huge amount about the cars other than its a more modern aircooled experience relative to the pre 89 cars which is what I would prefer and is in my price range.

Are there any issues with the 4 wheel drive setup/components on the C4? Are they robust? What is the concensus versus the C2? It would appear C2's are the more desirable.

The suspension is lowered 30 mm? Has anyone got practical feedback on how this should ride? What its like going over speedbumps etc? It would only be a weekend car but i would need to get around London at times

I like the look of this one. I know there are cheaper ones....but sounds like a nice car, lots of work done recently, and somewhat of an RS look which i like. My current car is guards red and I am a big fan of this colour

I moved from a boxster to a 964 so that's the best comparison I can give you. The 964 is more agricultural yet more engaging at the same time. Even though it supposedly only 30 bhp more powerful than the boxster it would kick its butt in a straight line. It's not so nippy round the tight corners but far better coming out the other side. Brakes are much more powerful on the 964.

The C4 in the advert looks well worth a closer look to me.

p.s. I still have the boxster because I'm greedy! [:D]
 
I looked at the car in your pic a year ago, prior to the previous owner buying it, and it was lovely :)

I bought its sister car shortly after it sold. They sat side by side at Strasse for a while (infact those wheels were off my car and they swapped them, lol). This car has the black leather with Guards Red externals, mine is linnen beige leather with Guards Red externals.

Great car, go have a look!

I have both a C2 and a S2.
Really depends what you will be using the car for?

Forgot to say that I don't think you would notice much difference between a standard C4 and C2 on the road. The C2 is a bit more playful when pushing hard on the track. The general consensus is that the 4WD was very well engineered and highly unlikely to let you down. There are a few extra bits on it (compared to the C2) like accelerometers and brake booster pump that can play up from time to time but are quickly sorted by a Porsche specialist that knows his 964s.

I think Colin's comments are spot. When you first drive the 911, it feels very different, which can be mis interpretted as it has dodgy handling and is always trying to kill you. Esp compared to a beautifully weighted transaxle car. After a while you will "get" how the weight difference works, and realise a lot of what you original felt is actually just feedback, then it starts click.

The guards red with black rims and lowered stance (combined with the engine note) was getting the car all sorts of attention on the way home.

I thought I would miss my 944 more....[:D]

I never saw it as a 'step up' as you say, except in terms of straight line performance (in which there was a considerable jump), simply as a change.

The 944S2 & the 964C2 are different & complimentary, if I could have kept the 944 I would have as a daily driver, but it was economically out of the question.

I dearly miss my old 944S2, you could put so much stuff in it for touring & still get over 30mpg. The 964 is just, well, different. Don't forget Porsche sold them at the same time & there was less of a gulf in price than, say, between the Boxster/Caymen and 997.

The other issue is spending a lot of money keeping a car on the road which isn't worth very much vs spending a similiar/greater amount on a car which is worth something and is unlikely to loose & may gain in value.

A lot of 944 owners have made the change to 964, maybe because it provides a significantly different experience in a slightly leftfield package at a reasonable price.

Glad you like your car though, its a select group this one, we know something other rear engined Porsche drivers are often too frightened to find out!
