Considering selling up!

Hi Guys,

I actually got around to renewing the tax on the Porsche today and taking her out.

She's a fantastic looking car, but perhaps I am getting a bit old, I actually couldn't be bothered with changing gears and thought it wa a chore! Since owning the merc, I've decided that I just like cruising and relaxing in an auto much more.

I've fallen in love with the drive of my old clk, and I am considering purchasing a w209 55 amg as my daily car.

If I do this I can't justify keeping the Porsche, I just seem to be spending money on the Porsche trying to improve it and using it as an expensive ornament. It only did a few hundred miles in the last year (this was partly due to waiting some months for the m030 from Porsche and the fact we had a terrible rainy summer).

Anyhow driving her today it was clear she did not like being stood up for so long, the gear change felt terrible, although after a run across town and getting moving it improved. I still wished I was using two pedals instead of three though :)

I guess I am weighing up upgrading the daily motor, and going back to using just one for myself.

I've kept it on an optimiser but tbh the battery probably could do with changing, it's taxed and not until Sep time and doesn't need a service until the same time.

It's had a lot of new parts, the engine was a bit tippy on tick over today but revving or taking we for a good drive cleared it. I guess she really just needs to be used more.

The clutch feels quite heavy to me now, but that could be because I have been driving an auto for the past few months.

Anyway, I've spent a few thousand in her upgrading and replacing parts, but I realise I won't get my money back. To be fair I probably need totals into account the heavy clutch and battery, so need to price her realistically. If I do sell how much do you guys think I should ask?

I've types this on my mobile so appologise for any errors :)

Cheers

Ok so the clutch and hears seem fine now some oil has for round the car! Pedal feels fine to I guess that was to Be expected with it being unused for so long!

The sun is shining on her outside the coffee shop and she looks stunning! I am having second thoughts already lol!

Lol, If she didn't look so nice staring at me in the sun right now! Stunning shape and colour :)

I really fancy going to just one comfy car for my commute though. The Porsche is far from uncomfortable but it's not as practical, example I wouldn't be able to get down the track to the firing range in it as there are so many huge pot holes and bumps in the track.

I'm also so used to only using her on nice days or in the summer that I just don't want to get her all crappy, I don't think she is an every day car tbh.

I totally can't justify getting the new merc and still have an expensive porsche ornament.

So I guess I either carry on as I am, bite the bullet and accept that the uk weather is crappy and use her more, or get rid I both and get the 55.

It's a tough one for sure!

I've arranged to test a W209 CLK 55 AMG next week to see how she compares. If she has the comfort and cruisability of my W208 which I expect she will, and the equipment that matches both of mine + the performance of the Porsche then I think I will part with the C2 and go back to just running one vehicle.

Well she has officially gone!

[:(]

I'll still linger around from time to time and check out what is happening on the forum :)

Have a good one guys.

Steve

A sad day indeed. I hope you find your way back to us in the not too distant future. Good luck with the AMG.

A shame you are leaving this Forum on a regular basis. Always good to read what you were getting up to.

Good luck with your new car, and I bet your be back in a Porsche one day.

Thanks for your help with my in correct M030 suspension order, the documents you sent was great proof, and sorted the problem quickly.

All the best Phil.

Sad to see you go Steve, and I am sure everyone will agree that we will miss your valuable contributions to the forum.

If you have gone all soft, maybe there is a Panamera out there for you in the future? [;)]

Enjoy the Merc, and hope to see you back here at some point.

Thanks guys and thankyou to all of you for your help and valuable contributions to the forum to make it what it is. RE M030, you are welcome Phillipe, glad it was all sorted :)

The 55 is totally different, but where I am at right now it makes sense and suits what I want a car for. It's spec is quite crazy (it even hands you your seatbelts!).

The Porsche was really only ever a summer toy to be honest. And I've covered such little mileage in the last year I started wondering was it worth it? I always thought she was a keeper, but add together £1000 alone in insurance, tax, annual service and MOT, + the money I keep spending on renewing / upgrading things I am just not getting much enjoyment for my money. Last year I spent around £2000 on her for only a few hundred miles, a little crazy really.

Sitting in the garage for so long was also not doing her any favours, another digit on the climate packed in just last week, the leather was drying out quickly and I had to keep trying to feed it, the clutch started to get stiff until warm and the pedal box squeek etc, it just started to not make sense to me any more.

She clearly didn't want to go either! I parked outside where the MB was, the chap came out and when I went to start her to move her she just went 'Wuuu' didn't even turn over once and wouldn't start! I turned off and on again and she started sluggishly and the exhaust popped. Very odd - that has never happened before. I used her the Tuesday before and stopped started quite a bit and she was perfect. I was quite embarassed at the time. She is not a happy bunny being sat around for so long un-used.

So, I've now gone down to one car that I can enjoy and use on a day to day basis. I guess I have found out from this that no matter how hard you try to look after a car, if you don't use it things will start to deteriorate and it is not good for the car - it needs to be used!

I've given the blue CLK to my father for now, and will look at selling her later in the summer. She's a lovely car too, and I worked quite hard to get her up together, but it's time to change.

Cheers all!

Well, it's been a couple of weeks. As with any second hand car I had a few jobs to do to the CLK, AMG, Mercedes, whatever you want to call it lol.

Replaced the passenger vanity glass, alarm siren and passenger front wishbone. But everything is up together now.

I must say it's two totally different worlds. The 996, I always stay close to the controls and the wheel, it was a car you wanted to really move in and have fun when taking it out. The CLK is something all together different, I'm all that more horizontal in it! It's got so many bells and whisltes, the seat and wheel moves away when you get out and adjusts you when you get in, keyless go etc etc. The command system is superb and the overall build quality is superb. The v8 soundtrack is also very nice, with the best part of 400hp and 400 ft lb it really is no slouch for a daily driver, but I am getting it booked in at CKS for a remap and decat once I have fitted the new filters to just squeeze that bit more out of it.

Can't wait for the summer for the roof to come off :) We tried it the other weekend when it was 15 degrees and sunny, was lovely until the sun went in!

I've given the W208 I worked on to my father for now, I will have it back in the future but for now it's just down to the wife's abarth and this one for us (trying to focus on some property investment this year with any luck).

Anyhow, hope all your 996's and other cars are going well, I miss the old girl and will buy another one day.

Cheers,
