Constant oil gurgling noise.....CURED!!

BIG UN

New member
Hi guys hopefully you can help me out here.
On engine start up I get the gurgling noise from the rear right quarter as a lot of us do, then when the car gets warm, 8o'clock on the dial, the noise is still there although a little quieter. Seems no matter how far I drive it's still the same. The only time it stopped was when the gauge got up to 9o'clock sat in traffic, then started again when cooler. Just had a resent engine re-build and run Mobil S 5w-40 syn. with an OE filter.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Andy.

I don't have an answer for your query, but surely if the engine was recently rebuilt, the garage that completed the work should be your first port of call?

Thermostat issue ? The oil should only be circulating when it is hot. Have you got enough oil in it ? I would check the level as per the handbook. Is it possible to get an airlock on one of these cars ? It might be wise to fully drain, and then re-fill the system. If all the above are OK then maybe it's something you'll have to get used to.

Colin, my Indy was the first place I asked and they weren't aware of a definitive answer, as some things they'd tried had not worked on different cars, so suggested I ask the '64 community first in case anyone had cured the problem then we could go from there. We had thought the thermostat may be the issue but I'll likely try a different filter first and see. Anyone tried a K&N oil filter for a higher flow rate? Oil level is fine so not that, thanks for the advice Mark. Andy.

You normally hear this when the oil is getting old and going thin and it happens on start up for while..well that is when my car does it so in my eyes the oil here is too thin ....I use Mobil 1 Motorsport that has a higher viscosity at 15-50 and i only get the gurgle as indicated .

Hi Big Un, I've had my 964 for three years now. In that time it's had three services, ie three lots of oil changes and filters done by Autofarm and if its any consolation, I get gurgling noises regularly, particularly noticeable when standing in traffic with the oil fully up to running temp. It comes from the oil tank in front of the OSR wheel. My engine is low mileage, everything else works perfectly, oil pipes and connections all OK, oil pressure and temp normal, no excessive oil loss etc and I've learnt to live with it. I treat it as one of the quirks of owning a 964. Hope that helps Chris

When I bought my C2 it did this all the time. Changing the oil to Mobil 1 motorsport and a Porsche oil filter sorted it. Doesn't do it at all now.

Thanks for the response guys, I've ordered a Mahle OC54 oil filter which we'll change for the Porsche LS128 I have on now. The Mahle seems a bit longer so worth a try as it's cheaper than changing the oil over at the moment but you may be right Ian a thicker oil could be the way I have to go. Will post back with the results. Andy.

OK guys thought some may like an update on this. Firstly in my original post I got the oil wrong and should in fact be Mobil S 10w-40 Semi-Syn. So changed the filter without dropping the oil (just 500miles on that), with a Mahle OC 54 from the Porsche LS128 and the noise has gone completely, very happy now. Thanks again for the help. Andy.
