CONSTANT TICKING NOISE FROM ENGINE

Anyone have any idea what could be the reason for a constant ticking noise coming from the engine? Noise is apparent both when idling and driving!

Regards

Is it a 3.4 or a 3.6? How many miles has she done? Mines' a 3.6 and has done 19K miles - she "ticks" a bit on start up but this tends to fade when she's warm. Are you sure that it doesn't stop when yours is warm? I think that this is a characteristic of the car to be honest. I've started putting 10w/40 Castrol magnatec oil in mine and she's definitely quieter. I think that Mobil 1 (0w/40) is just too thin for our climate. I would think that the noise is your hydraulic tappits, but you have take into account age/mileage/and how nasty the noise is.
Adrian.

I stand to be corrected but a 0-40 and a 10-40 would be the same viscosity when hot.
The two numbers indicate the viscosity, related to a SAE scale, of the oils when cold and hot, so the 0-40 will only be thinner when cold, when arguably that is better.

As Adrian says, it sounds like it could be a hydraulic tappet, or possibly a valve spring.

I too found that a 5W-40 or 10W-40 helped a great deal in reducing the occasional start-up clatter common on the 996. Rightly or wronly, I put it down to the fact that the oil doesn't drain down as quickly overnight.

The '40' is just an SAE rating to classify oils within a viscosity range. To make a direct comparison, you need to compare the absolute viscosity (in Centistokes) of different oils at the same temperature. '40' refers to a band of between around 12-16 Centistokes at 100°C, so there can be a large difference in viscosity between two '40' oils. Mobil 1 and Magnatec -40 oils have very similar viscosities at 100°C, but Magnatec is slightly "thicker".

If it speeds up and down with engine speed then its likely to be the tappets - i've just had one set replaced under warranty on my 987 because soem mornings after a 4 or 5 day period of inactivity they were very noisy. OPC found nothign but changed them anyway - seems beter now.

I know of two other similar incidents, where a blocked oil hole/channel in the tappet led to camshaft wear and a sudden increase in noise level - both these were on MY03 2.7 Boxsters
