Continental tyres...how long should they last.........?

Its in Tognola for the service at the moment....they rang me up and said the rears are getting near the wear limit......shock horror....

they have only done 3K miles !!!! is this normal...I do use the car daily..mainly motorway.....with the odd blast round the country lanes.....

is this normal wear?....would a different tyre be better suited...(I am impressed with the grip of the Conti N2 but could do with a little more "life"..... I will prob do about 15K annually..

any advice....

 
That seems excessive to me for the use you mention. My rear Conti's have been on 6000 miles and less than half worn.

Do you run the specified pressures and are they wearing evenly across the width ?
 
They should last forever and a day! I've done five days on track, two of which the driving was shared with a professional racer friend who likes to be sideways a lot [:D] Mine are about half worn now and have been run at 32psi front, 34psi rear cold. I've also got significant camber on the car, which will wear them more.

In my experience they're really good, both in terms of wet and dry grip and tyre life. Something sounds a little strange....[8|]

Something doesn't sound right .... I have always had conti's and the quickest they got to 3mm was after 2 track days and approx 7k miles.

just noticed you're from Reading so well done !!

although in reality the Conti's are the hardest compound N rated tyre for the 993, 280 wear rating, so should last a while...

I was getting circa 8k from 220 Wear Rating Michelin and Pirelli and that was on about 6-7 track days a year

 
assuming you drive it like 964 RS owners then from your pic it looks like you're running 18's

is the excessive wear noticeable on certain sections of the tyre ? or consistent across the tyre? could be an alignment problem ? and was it both tyres ??
 
I was running far too much toe in on the rears...spotted by Wayne at chips wizard on the rolling road......I had the RS geometry set up at Tognola approx 500 miles ago....There was a noticeble improvement in handling afterwards.....
Maybe the damage was done with the large toe in settings....might try the Contis again....(after the comments above) as v impressed otherwise......ho hum another 300 quid to the local tyre merchants on its way.........

if i really push it maybe get it down to 2500 miles......
 
RS settings IMHO don't really work on the road, if you dont do many track days et al...

try Fast Road ie. in between that ensures you have normal'ish tyre life, yes seriously

as for Tyres, the Michelins I found to be sharper in response...... although when yu did the suspension change, did you also upgrade the anti-roll bars ?

I have been running 34 Front and 36 Rears is this too high.....?

I get it back from Tognola today...full service and new disks and pads all round.......ouch!!!!

on 17's it should be 36' F&R on the harder Conti's

if you're on 18's then you're massively under inflated and no wonder your tyres are shagged !

what size wheels and tyres do you have ?
 
I am on 18's please advise the pressures I should be running.....

This may be the problem then......

Porsche recommends 36 fronts, 44 rears. If they are under-inflated the centers tend to bulge at speed and wear excessively fast and the edges wear also when going slow so not good.

although you may hear folk knock down the recommended PSI by 1 or 2 PSI, you had only 80% of the recommended pressure and that is a lot missing.....
 
Excuse me but I have been reading, on this forum, threads where people are saying as low as 32F/36R on 18" wheels and I have dropped my down to 34F/38R on this basis. Certainly 36F/44R is ludicrous and wears the centre of the rears very quickly.

tyres brands, our cars, each of us and how they are all driven vary so differently...... are you sure you are not getting your track day starting pressures mixed up with road pressures ?

at the end of the day nothing is the same except for the recommended advice from Porsche and the Tyre Company who have done all that testing....... OEM tyre pressures are there for a reason....

I dont follow OEM stats exactly (used to be 1.5 PSI less than OEM on my 993, current 2 PSI + on the 996!) but that's my choice based on my specific choices, experience, experimenting and circumstances that are unique to myself...

Upped the pressures....will try the 36/44 for a while as the 36/38 has resulted in my rears lasting 3k. The contis appear to have the highest wear rating and the manual does recommend these pressures.

I will let you all know what happens.....

right+ 0 degrees 17 mins

After left +0 degrees 18 mins
right +0 degrees 18 mins
