Continuing woes

I have posted a few items about my beloved 944 and the engine problems. To refresh your memory I purchased this car about 5 weeks ago. I had it three days and popped, what I thought, was a head gasket. Had the head worked on as it was burnt. Fitted it and STILL had the same problem. Cost £318 for head work. Bought another engine, fitted it and no oil pressure (another £300). Changed oil pump, No oil pressure when engine hot. Well I have decided that I am going to build one good engine out of the two that I have. I suspect the the main bearings in the second engine have gone as at tickover when cold I get 5 bar. At normal operating temp I have about 1/2 bar and an angry oil pressure warning light. Wish me luck or sell me a box of matches and a gallon of petrol [:(]

If you want to drive a porsche you must take all she has to throw at you, as one day if not tomorrow you will throw all you have at her.................[]

Hi Ian how are you getting on, did you strip both engines to make one good one....... let us know

Ian
sorry to hear your difficulties.
If you need a decent engine try Porsch-Apart or some of the good breakers, and trade in all the engines you have for one good one?
Hope things improve soon

I think Ian has been that route twixce already George. I think given the odds and never knowing how good a S/H engine is he is far wiser to rebuild one of the engines he has. That way it should be good for 100k miles +

The problem with second hand engines with no proper provinance is all the wasted labour fitting them and then removing them again when you find they are faulty. The only warantee you get from breakers is they will replace a faulty part but that doesn't account for the cost of the labour.

Thanks for the comments and inspiration. I have another engine [:(]. This one is going to be fitted next weekend and then while I enjoy what life it has to offer me I will totally re build one engine from the two kaput ones I have. Can someone clarify a point for me. Are these engines re boreable? and if so what is the max they can be taken out to? Sounding a little Barry I know. But hey life for me begins at 58 [:D] As for the hassle of engine removal etc Thanks to Clarks Garage info I have it down to a tee now. Plus some things I have learnt from actually doing it and advice from forum member. I just have to make some room in my works for the project to begin. Too many Mercedes and not enough Porsche's.

not sure you've said what block it is anywhere? if its the S2 then I read somewhere that Porsche said capacity could be increased to 3.2 mybe even 3.4 ! no idea whether that would be by boring or altering the stroke or piston ?.best to look at www.Rennilist.com if anyone has done our American cousins will know about it.

The engines are reboreable, and (if available) you can get 0.5mm and 1.0mm oversize pistons, but the bores are Alusil lined so you need to use someone fully au-fait with the process and who has an understanding of how the final honing should be done. It seems that Alusil knowledge is pretty thin on the ground and there have been a few tales of woe over the years of it going wrong, so use a specialist who knows our cars.

An alternative is to have them bored right out then sleeved with a steel liner so you can then use any coating of your choice (which is what Jon and Simon have done to my 3 litre block using Nikasil coating)
