Control arm bushes

Now that I have got the Seven on the road I am working my way through a list of jobs on my 944.

I am about to change the control arm rear mounts as because.
1. The car is suffering from queit bad tramlining.
2. The MOT man gave me an advice note regarging this mount saying it was causing excessive wheel movement.
3. The drivers side front tire is showning signs of uneven wear on its outside edge.

Last night I checked the play in the both front wheels. To me it appeared that the front mount was moving instead of the rear mount, steering or ball joint for the upright.

Has anybody else experienced this with the front mount. I have read several posts about the rear mount and eccentric bolt.

I already have the rear mount so I shall replace this.

Many thanks

Hi Doug
The front mounts are easy to replace.. Ive fitted a set of Powerflex stiffer bushes in my S2 ..
BUT
b4 you go ahead + fit them, check your bottom ball joints as they are prone to wear.. + if they are worn youl need to get some newer wishbones + they usually come comlete with new bushes....

PS youl need to have your geometry re-set after youve done this work otherwise youl continue to wear your tyres out....Itl also TRANSFORM the handling......

I also have Powerflex bushes and my car has been eating them (3 sets in 4,000 miles). I have a custom modified set waiting to go on to try to cure it, but I also got a new set of standard ones from the OPC just in case they don't.

What are you doing to your bushes...??
Mine "seem" to be OK ....
+ thats mostly track based work.....

Basically they are too small and the arm is able to move slightly which acts like a slide hammer and breaks up the back "top hat" piece. I have no idea why my car needs bigger bushes than yours/968's.

I shall check the ball joint before I start.
I plan to do this as follows unless anybody has a better idea.
Car is up in the air on axle stands under the front jacking point.
Jack under the control arm with block of wood between the jack and the control arm to just to take the load. This I think should isolate the ball joint from the bushes. I can then feel for play in the upright.

I looked on the PET system which I have download of Ricks site and it doesn't give a part number for the front bush. I am not that keen on going for powerflex stiffer bushes as I need to car for the daily grind. It's already the M030 set up. Does anybody now the part number. Is it just a case of pushing out the old bush with a big socket and pushing the new one in.

I noticed the other evening that the eccentric bolts are set about 50 to 60deg different from side to side. This may be the main culprit for the tire wear. I shall have the geometry checked when I am done.

Many thanks

Doug

The bushes I have are p/n 951 341 04 131, and they are bushes for the rear of the arm. I do not have front ones.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]To remove the old ones you need to cut the metal end off before you can push them out (unless you can pull them out) - they have an outer and inner metal sleeve with the rubber between them and I had to cut slots in the outer and chisel it out. The OPC replacements come in two parts as did the originals and they are installed from either end.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Fen,

The bushes I have are p/n 951 341 04 131, and they are bushes for the rear of the arm. I do not have front ones.

Can I use these as control arm front bushes. Lee at the OPC in Cambridge who is normally very good did not know of a replacement front bush as the system only shows it as part of the arm.

Many thanks

Doug

So the PowerFlex bushes are my only real option then if there is no straight replacement part. I have checked the ball joint by
Car is up in the air on axle stands under the front jacking point.
Jack under the control arm with block of wood between the jack and the control arm to just to take the load. This I think should isolate the ball joint from the bushes. I can then feel for play in the upright.
and can't feel any movement in it.

Many thanks for your help

Doug
