Hello
I was wondering if I could have your help.

The roof on my 987 is not closing too well as when it comes back up the curves stick out. A few garages have looked at it but cannot repair it. Does anyone know of any good roof specialists in the Surrey area worth checking out?

Thanking you

Ian

Hi Ian. This is a problem that I have experienced on both my 987s. The elastic which keeps the roof sides tight enough to go inside the guides loosens - hence the roof doesn't close correctly. They can be tightened a couple of times but they get to the point when they say enough is enough. My indie said the only option is a new roof! [8|] A bit drastic! However, I found a trimmer quite happy to replace the elastic. He is based in Loughborough - a bit too far from you but there must be someone who is a vehicle trimmer who can do the same thing. I suggest you google car trimmers in your locality and give them a ring to see if they have any experience of this. A little further from you is Southbound near Andover - they would do it I'm sure if you are prepared to go that far.

I hope you manage to get it sorted.

It’s not too difficult to repair yourself. There’s loads of advice on the web. The elastic that pulls the hood into place deteriorate and stretch. It’s stitched into a piece of cloth at the hood, near the door glass and fastened at the other end to one of the alloy roof struts with a Torx headed screw through a number of adjustment holes in the elastic. It’s possible to adjust the tension on the hood/elastic by undoing the screw and reattaching through one of the holes closer to the hood. It’s also possible to purchase some new elastic from a haberdashery supplier and replace it. My Boxster is a 2007 with 110k in the clock, not sure the mileage has had an effect but maybe it has influenced the number of Hood open/shut instances. Initially I adjusted mine but I have since replaced both sides. You‘ll be able to see quite easily with a torch. Open the roof half way then pull the headlining away near the rear of the door glass. You’ll see its held in place with a couple of Velcro loops around the roof struts. Once disconnected you should be able to pull it away enough to see the knicker elastic and trace it to both ends. It’s either grey or black and about a centimetre wide.
