Converting RHD to LHD?

JarmoL

Hi there,

Does anyone know what is actually needed to this conversion? Maybe someone has done it the other way? Are the parts needed readily availale in UK as second hand parts? Any guess about the cost of the parts only?

Thanks,
Jarmo

Jarmo,

This subject comes up time and time again - and, without fail, every time the conclusion is .... DON'T DO IT!!!

The fundemental problem is that there are significant bodily differences between LHD and RHD cars - silly things like the bonnet release and diagnostic ports being swapped over - apart from the obvious things like steering rack, pedal box, dashboard (including the metalwork behind it) etc. etc. There can be no justification of converting a RHD car to LHD - usually it's the other way round.

The way the current market is you could sell the RHD car and buy a better LHD car for less money - where is the sense in spending money to achieve the same thing?? The UK is currently the cheapest place to buy a LHD car - many are being exported to Europe and sold at much higher prices.

Hi,

Thanks for your comments. The reason for even thinking about it was that you seem to have very nice, well taken care of, already modded 964's for sale in UK. Obviously RHD car in here isn't very practical so.. Also we still have to pay import taxes in Finland and I'd imagine the taxes would be less in RHD compared to LHD..
The other marketplace for me for Porsches is obviously Germany. It's just that I don't have too much trust for the sellers over there.

Jarmo,

You will find that a lot of 964s for sale in the UK are already LHD since many have been imported from Europe and are left as LHD. The prices for LHD cars are significantly lower than RHD cars so it would be madness to buy a RHD car with the intent of converting to LHD.

As I said before, the UK is currently a good place to buy a LHD car since prices are somewhat lower than in mainland Europe. Just watch the Pistonheads adverts (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/list.asp?s=556) and you will find many of them are LHD.

Indeed,

I have been looking for some time now and have noticed the difference in price..
There just happen to be two quite nice (for me) RHD's for sale right now. [8D]

But I guess I'll keep looking for a proper LHD then. (c2 with no sunroof, RS replica would do nice thank you!)
