Coolant Guage Failure

MY 2003 996 Carrera 2 Coupe Tip - 45,000 miles. Started 3 months ago. On using car from cold when the coolant gauge gets to 60 degrees it fails to zero and the associated red light flashes. OBC shows thermometer icon and words 'failure indicated'. First time was panic and checked coolant level, blocked radiator grills - but all ok. After another 3-8 miles the gauge flicks back to life, the gauge comes to life, the needle flicks to 80 degrees then settles back to 65 degrees and the red flashing warning light goes out. Thereafter for remainder of journey assuming coolant temp stays above 60 degrees the gauge is OK. It can then take anything between 15 -60 minutes for the gauge to get to it usual Op Temp of 75-80 degrees. Assume from symptoms that somewhere the electrical connection goes 'open circuit' as 'short circuit' is indicated by gauge going to full hot deflection. Have tried spraying coolant level plug connector on coolant tank with WD40 and on one occasion seemed to solve problem but it was back next journey and no more WD40 applications helped. Can I get at the thermostat and its connector easily to check or not. Any ideas please.

Perhaps try the connections to the temperature sensor (2). I think you should be able to get to them if you remove the airbox.

Thank you, will give it a try and come back if no change to situation. Part of the problem is,although I know it is probably a transient failure, the drivers hand book makes it very clear that a flashing red warning light is a NO-GO. But given that all returns to normal after a few miles I have taken a calculated risk in continuing to drive until it is due in for its Service at Paragon in E Sussex and I live in Cornwall.
 
have had it on a few tiptronics where the vac pipe for the coolant valve attached to the side of the tip box has come off the valve and does not therefore actuate the valve and is not circulating roung the cooler on the tip box.
what this then does is throw the red warning light on on the coolant gauge, if all that fails then possible coolant sensor which is situated just behind the drive belt..
 
Thanks for the advice. Can you explain where I find this vacuum pipe please - I assume it is a ramp task?
