Coolant gushing ....

Hello,

I have a 2002 Boxster 2.7 with 39k miles and due to have a full service in a couple of weeks. I've had the car for about 18 months and have done about 7k miles since the last service a year ago. It's been a fantastic car, and exceeded my expectations in all respects. But, this morning, after a 40 minute commute including a 10 minute crawl in traffic, when I pulled into the car park I heard a gushing sound from the rear of the car and when I got out to investigate there was lots of nice green coolant making a large puddle underneath the offside rear wheel. The temperatue gauge was on normal (middle of the zero in the 80) for all the journey.

Anyone got any ideas ?

The same thing happended to kitchens on one of our meets in the Lakes - right in the middle of hardknot pass [&:]

We managed to refill the system with some water from a nearby stream - and coaxed the car off the pass. It was none the worse for the experience, and the OPC couldn't find anything amiss a few days later when it was checked over.

Check your levels, and ensure the cap is screwed on tightly - then keep an eye on things til you get to the service

It did indeed happen to me ..the car emptied loads of coolant it was to be fair sitting at a fair uphill angle ,even the sheep found it difficult to go up the hill ,toped up with stream water and Volvic and I was on my way ,When I got home the next day took it to OPC and they filled and pressure tested it no leaks found ,never happened again .

Just an update - I filled the tank before I left the car park in the evening and must have put about 4/5 pints of tap water in. By the time I got home (after about) 20 miles the coolant warning light had come on so the day after I put another 2/3 pints in. Today I checked again and the level was down again and I put another 3 pints in. There's no sign of any leakage so I assume that the top-ups have been to take up the slack as it were. I'll check tonight about the tank capacity.

Thanks for the posts.

You may have lost more than 5 pints in the first instance - the system is very easy to get air locks in due to the long length of horizontal pipework running along the sills from rear to front. If possible try to park the car on a steep downhill slope with the engine idlling in an effort to get the air back to the coolant tank.

If you've lost that much i think i'd be dropping by the OPC though.

I'd lift your rear boot carpet. Don't be surprised if it's full of tap water.

Sounds like your expansion tank has split.
