Coolant hose failure on C4S

As a follow up to my post on "Coolant hoses and Servicing - What should this cover?", I thought I'd post a couple of pics of the failed part. I also asked Porsche GB if they wanted the part back for further diagnosis on the failure so that I could get an idea of the probable cause.

Stuart Thomas of Customer Services spoke with the Techical Department who said that the fault was not an uncommon one and didn't need further investgation. I do not know therefore whether the failure was as result of the mileage (84,000 miles in 30 months), recent low temperatures, joint bonding failure etc. As the hose assembly in question is behind a protective cover on the underside of the car and not inspected as part of the normal minor and major service routines, it might be worth asking your OPC/Independent to do a quick check next time your car's in for any work.

Hope this is of help.

John

With a joint lip that short I'm surprised it lasts 84 miles let alone 84k miles. Not uncommon failure remark is of no surprise to me having now seen it. The design of that hose needs sorting. Hopefully it already has and the replacement part is an improved version. Worth asking the question.

Thanks Geoff,

I'll ask the OPC next time I'm there. It would interesting to compare it with the 997 hose layout too.

I had a failure of the same hose in my 996 cab, 2003 car with 10000 miles on the clock. Took 3 visits to the OPC to diagnose and finally replace the part. It has been fine since and was all covered by warranty

Can you guys help, during heavy traffic today I noticed steam from the front of my GT2 , although Temp was normal. I am not talking loads as it soon cleared when I started moving. can you tell me if this was how your problem started.

Thanks

Anthony

Hi Anthony,

I've noticed this on my car recently. I don't think it'sanything to worry about. Everything was normal temp on the indicators etc. I just think it was the water on the rads vaporising whilst the car was stationary.

Thanks John.

I found this on the forum ...

Simon

I posted this question on PH and had a fair response.

I've not heard of warping but the guys on there were talking about TT. Lots of dirt collects by the rads and they corrode.

One of my rads is leaking. When I'm in traffic I can see steam rising and every month or so I have to top up. Apparently it may well cost £800 to rectify.....needless to say I'm hanging on.

They recommend fitting a mesh behind the cooling ducts in the bumper to stop dirt and leaves collecting there.

Have fun.

Do you think it is worth getting it checked out???

Definitely worth keeping a regular on the coolant level. I'll do the same and update this thread.

If you're concerned I'd get it checked out at your OPC anyway. Could be expensive if you don't and you certainly don't enjoy driving with those niggling little doubts in the back of your mind.
