my coolant keeps leaking through an overflow pipe over the exhaust pipe i cant think of a reason why. it keeps doing this when the car is hot a friend told me to bleed the system but im not sure. Has anyone encountered this problem before?

I had the same problem, only leaking when warm. It turned out to be a Hairline crack in the header tank. I was told that this was quite a common occurrence on the 996. I was fortunate enough for it to go whilst Porsche GB had my car on display and so they consequently repaired it. The technician at OPC Silverstone said the tank was about £250.00, and that they would need to drop the left side of the engine to get it out. You can always check the header tank, run the engine until the coolant starts leaking out, then look at the header tank, if the tank is not full its unlikely to be leaking from the overflow. The heat and pressure causes the hail line crack to expand, so when its cold no leak.

Check the cap first as they commonly give up. It is on its 4th update. Pop the bonnet (or is it boot, I never know. Call it rear lid) when the leak occurs and have a look. If it is coming from the rear of the coolant tank then it could be cracked, another common problem. Not expensive to replace if your car is post 2001 as the tanks were half the price of pre-facelifts.
