coolant leak

hi i need a little advice, took the car out for a quick blast this evening all was great as usual, parked the car up on my drive then went in side for 20min and now the car has a puddle of coolant next to the passenger exhaust pipe. i have checked the expansion tank and doesn't look like its coming from there. Its dripping from behind the heat shield. Do the coolant pipes run behind that ? Anyone else had a leak from this area ?

thanks kerry

No didn't realise there were different caps will check later will it have a part nber on it? The thing that confuses me is that I checked the expansion tank this morning and it's o ly just dropped below the min mark if there was a hole in one of the pipes would it not have dumped the whole tank

thanks kerry

The older caps are notorious for blowing off at too low a pressure, but if that was the case you would see traces of coolant in the drip tray around the cap, and it would exit the rubber tube near the wheel arch.

The tanks are prone to cracking, or pin-holing, and this usually happens on the back of the tank where you can't see it. However, you can often see small amounts of coolant on the side of the engine compartment, just under the tank.

You were right Richard managed to remove the tank and it had a tiny crack at the back which when it gets hot and is under pressure pisses out and when it cold just drip really slowly. Now to order a new one, dose anyone now the part number or a good place to buy from. its a 1998 3.4.

thanks

The latest version of the tank for a 996 (up to MY2000) is 996.106.147.56 and the list price from Porsche is £193.59 +VAT.

There are several other suppliers (Euro Car Parts, Type911, Design911, Berlyn Services, amongst others) so you'll have to shop around to see if they are cheaper.

Edit: It is a different part for MY2001-on of 996.106.157.04 @ £88.68 +VAT, just in case anyone picks up this thread at a later date.

I bought an alternative supplier expansion tank several years ago for my 996 - lasted 13months and split again - subsequent Porsche supplied item has been fine for many years. I always look around for possible alternatives to Porsche supplied and am usually satisfied with choice - not this time and it wasn't that much cheaper.

thanks for the info the cheapest pattern part i have found is only £40 cheeper then opc so may as well order genuine. I just don't understand how the 2001 version is only £85 and the pre 2001 is £193 ??? surely its the same plastic or dose the older one has gold in it :)

Look on the bright side. At least the 10% Club discount will amount to something.....

i gave up trying to make sense of Porsche prices a long time ago.

all ordered £230 with my PGB discount :) thats for the new tank, new cap and anti freeze. Thats my job for the weekend

thanks for the help

Tricky job (just done mine), this!

Don't drive the car until it's done. Not only could it fail spectacularly (and your engine would be dead before the coolant level light came on...) but in the mean-time the coolant system will probably not be able to generate the pumping pressures it needs to avoid the hot-spotting internally that most likely results in bore-wear, etc.
