Coolant leak

Really hoping some of you guys might be able to offer some advice on my '00 2.7 Boxster. A few months ago, she had her 48k service. Everything hunky dory. Am just about to sell her and last week she had a set of new tyres, full mot, new tax, etc. Drove her home from MOT station and on parking her in my drive, was horrified to see a load of steam pouring out from under the engine at the rear followed by the coolant draining out all over the driveway. Filling the coolant up, there's no leak until she's started and heats up, then - whoosh - coolant leak everywhere.

My knowledge isn't too good, but I'm guessing that this might be a blown head gasket or something similar? If anyone has any advice on how expensive this might be or if it might be a different problem which any of you guys have encountered, I'd be grateful for some advice. Really don't want to spend any more on her as I have bought another (sensible) car and she is due to be sold this week!

Sounds very much like it could be a cracked coolant tank. Quite common. Have a search on the forum and you will find similar cases and costs incurred.
 
Check in the boot and lift the carpet. If it's the tank it goes in the boot and then drains out just in front of the offside rear wheel. What you are describing sounds a little different.

Tank replacement will set you back about £550 at an OPC or half that at an independant.

Thanks for this advice. I'll admit to knowing next to nothing about mechanics and stuff, but if the tank was cracked, wouldn't the coolant drain out even when the engine was cold? Or do they suffer from a hairline crack or something which would only make the problem evident under pressure?
 
Check fron rads - just had to replace mine due to corrosion from leaves etc colledcting in fron PU

I believe that it leaks under pressure. I had mine replaced earlier this year and the first I knew was when I saw two stains on the floor in front of the offside rear wheel. One in my car port and one in my regular parking space at work. Lifting the carpet revealed a lot of coolant swilling around the boot.

Well now I'm completely confused. The car has been into a local garage and they've run it for an hour and cannot find a leak. The engine looks ok and dry as a bone, but the soundproofing carpet above it was soaking wet and the overflow wells either side were full of water because the drainage holes (which I think drain to the wheel arches) were blocked.

They couldn't see any sign of water in the oil, but wouldn't totally rule out a head gasket problem. They've cleaned the drainage pipes and advised me to run it for a while to see what happens.

Can any of you experienced guys throw some light on this?

I'd hazard a guess that as the engine temperature reaches its maximum (with engine cover in place) a small hole/leak which is pointing upwards is directing a fine spray onto the cover and eventually dripping down into the wells. Did garage drive it for an hour - hate to think of it "ticking over" for that long (or even 5 minutes).

Sounds like your rain gutters are blocked.
