Coolant Loss

A few weeks ago, I got out of my '99 C4 and heard a hissing sound from the nearside of the engine. I opened the cover and looked for any sign of a leak but could'nt find anything. Reasoning that the cause was probably water from the road surface on the exhaust pipe, I thought no more about it. This happened a couple more times and then disappeared. Yesterday, the temp warning light started blinking at me so I stopped the car, let the engine cool and put about 2 - 3 litres of water into the coolant reservoir but still could find no sign of a leak then or after a gentle drive today
Obviously, I've read the unfortunate alimac's thread about a cracked cylinder and I'm trying not to get paranoid about my problem and, in any case, I have an OPC used warranty on the car renewed only a month ago. Also the engine seems to be idling and revving properly
Has anyone any ideas where the coolant might be leaking from? Also, the car was serviced shortly before this happened so I'm a bit suspicious that something might have been dislodged during the service.
 
See all the threads about coolant expansion tanks - cracks, splits and pinholes are commonplace. That's the most likely cause, and they are most often in places where it is impossible to see them. I believe Porsche are on their 5th revision of this item - about the same as rear main oil seals!
 
I had the corroded radiators...ended up finding pools of coolant in front of both front wheels.
OPC replaced them under warranty...and it's been fine since.
Yet another fluid leak though...

I have just been asked by a 996 owner about coolant losss suffered by his 996 I suspect head gasket or water pump seal has anyone else had any problems with excessive use of coolant if so what was the diagnosis

as suggested header tank,rads check for puddles of water,, can look at it for him if he wants to unless he's not near you which is donny....
 
My brother in law used to suffer coolant loss all the time in his 996.

Turned out to be the header tank cap, which is also a problem on Boxsters. He followed my advice and took off his one which had a part number ending in .00 and replaced it with a new one with the part number ending in .02 and it cured it!

Its the blue cap he takes off to top up the coolant he is using :)
 
I am experiencing the same coolant loss problem! Bit of a pain on those (rare) hot days. I have been advised that both the condenser units are leaking and therefore the system is not holding the gas. However, sounds like it could cost rather a lot of money to put right. Has anyone been able to replace the condenser units themselves and then get a specialist to regas the system? If so the info will be gratefully received! Got to keep the cost down so I can afford to put fuel in the thing!
 
you can get the condensors yourself yes but you need to go to indy first to get degas if their is any left in system,then you can change them , front bumper off to replace ..
we are currently doing the pair including aircon regas for £330 + vat
