coolant pipe rupture 4.5S

Is it inevitable that my engine coolant pipes will rupture ?
If and when they do will I get home with it or have to call ot the AA or someone ?

All pipes will go eventually! - (wasn't aware of any particular problems for Cayennes)

If they go, it would usually be a flatbed to a garage.

Thanks Mike ,
I get the impression that most of them have been replaced.
It certainly seems fairly common

If they are going to burst i am wondering if i should
pre empt it and have it done before it happens as I do
motorway runs in France and would hate to get stuck
somewhere .If it is a known fault would Porsche replace them for free ?
The car has done 40k miles but it is an o3 (owned from new )

When I was looking for a Cayenne some time ago I was informed by the OPC Technicians that plastic pipes are a real problem as they get brittle with engine heat.

Thanks Peter
Anyone know of a modification to the composition of the pipes .
Is there a particular mileage one should be aware of ?

Hi Kevin

I think the best bet would be to as the OPC or an independant.

I recall from memory that they may well be replaced with metal pipes as a mod.

Thanks will ask Tonbridge .If metal is available i will go for it and have it done
probably in France as labour is only around £50 ph . which would reduce the cost
considerably.

Thanks David .I am really surprised that it is more .Perhaps it was Antibes ?
I get all my Mercedes serviced in France but have never had the Kn done there or the Boxsters .
I had a quote today from OPC of £1200 give or take £100 for the job .Apparently you can have the option
of metal or plastic pipes .Porsche declined to contribute to the cost .Malheureusement [:-]

My coolant pipes failed suddenly and dramatically without warning, under full throttle up a hill,I thought there was a fire and actually called the fire brigade,it was fixed under extended warranty and the replacements are updated and are metal.
I was upset at the time, ask your dealer for a deal on the labour and parts if it is a preventative fix.
My Cayenne is an 06 MY S ,above 90k at the time.Been perfect ever since.

Surely then the fact that Porsche will not contribute means that they do not see it as a real problem. I have extended warranty and wonder if it happened to me it would cost them a lot more in the long run. So why wont thwy do it before the pipes go ?

Thanks Mark .Maybe i am jumping the gun too much if you got
to 90K miles before it happened. However mine is an 03 so perhaps
that should be taken into consideration ? Although I have had it
from new i have never extended the warranty so i suppose that is a
saving of several thousand pounds .A second OPC has offered to knock
off the club discount from the work and has said they are now all metal .

Well Major I guess if they just accepted there was a problem
it might open the flood gates so I guess they do see it as a real problem.
I wonder when the actual modification came in obviously after 2006 .
Roughly speaking it is £500 for the spares and £500 for the labour
on that basis about a 4/5 hour job .
DARE I DO IT MYSELF ? .................

New pipes look like these;

We have the kit in stock, worth taking with you if your going on a long journey!

Can be done DIY if your good with the spanners, allow a days work though

I have had them done by my OPC.
They are quite solid plastic pipes OPC said they were actually OK
I dont know if they had gone hard with use or whether they are hard
plastic to start with.Anyway it gives peace of mind having them done .

Now of course the drive shafts have started to rattle again
