Coolant type

I am having a heater matrix changed in my 944 S2 with a garage that is not a Porsche specialist. They are excellent mechanics and there are no concerns about them being able to complete the work to a high standard.

I have read before that Porsches should (for some reason) use Porsche branded coolant only. The indie I usually use always charges for Porsche coolant when it has been changed before. Is this really necessary or will any quality coolant be sufficient?

Thanks

The problem used to be that you needed a phosphate-free antifreeze due to the aluminium head but virtually all antifreeze is phosphate free nowadays. Just use a quality brand and it will be fine - the VW/Audi and BMW branded ones are reasonable price from a dealer and good quality.

I was just wondering the same thing.

I use GM (Vauxhall) red antifreeze in my day to day car - costs about 12 quid for 5L - which is also an alloy head.
I assume this would also be ok in the 944?

Cheers,
Ian

You know it's an alloy block as well as an alloy head? Probably an easier life for the antifreeze as there's less chance of dissimilar corrosion like you'd get with a steel block and alloy head.
