Cooler Header Tank

My car is in for a service and apparently my tank has a hair line crack which I am told is a common Boxster fault. The garage is quoting £450 to replace. I just wondered if anybody knows of any sealents etc. that can be used as a cheaper alternative?

thanks

Fairly common fault with the earlier cars (mine had the problem) - the tank was redesigned on later cars.

I don't think that sealant will prevent it splitting further - DIY would be cheaper.

I agree with JCB, a new tank can be had from Eurocarparts for ~£50 for the facelift version or ~£120 for the pre-facelift version, and either DIY or get an Indy to fit it in under 2 hours + coolant.

You will never seal a fuel tank. You would need to empty it fill it with sand or such to prevent an explosion and weld it. Best option is second hand tank if you can get one.

Luckily he is talking about the coolant expansion tank which doesn't normally contain petrol! [&:]
