Cooling fan problems

Hi folks, first post on the forum but been lurking for a few months since purchasing a 1990 951.

Really enjoying the car and have been doing minor work to it here and there to get it looking and running spot on (had been sitting in a garage unused for 3 years prior to purchase) - belts, wishbones, full service, all fluids....etc etc.

Anyway, getting to the point of my post... I took the car for a spirited spin on Sunday. When I came back and parked the car up I noticed the cooling fan was running....fairly normal, I know. I then came back to the car 30 minutes later and it was still on? I removed the fan relay to stop the battery from draining. Went back to the car tonight and went for a spin thinking it may be a sticky thermostat but came back and switched the engine off and the problem persists.

I did a search here and have narrowed it down to the rad thermo switch, the relay, or the thermostat. Was hoping someone here could shed some light on what it may be?

Thanks in advance
Rich.

yep very common for the thermostat to fail.

I had the thermostat fail, then the relay, then the fan came loose flapped against the crankshaft pulley cutting through the terminal block on the fan and was not obvious when the car was stationary as it flapped back into position.......

cheers for the help folks...hopefully just the switch then. Will do a little more digging to make sure before I order anything

Rich
