Cooling Fan Relay

Simon just been out and looked under the bonnet = G10 = 944.615.104.02 It doesn't look like a common relay as its very large and bulky ! Chris

Does anyone know the part number for the cooling fan relay for a 1990 Turbo? I'm struggling to get access as the car is garaged away from my house.

Cooling fan stayed on so battery flat now. I've ordered a radiator thermo switch but thought i'd replace the relay to cover all bases. I believe i can save a few quid as it's a universal relay and if so from what other car / part number?

Many thanks,
Simon

Thanks for popping out so promptly Chris very much appreciated. I'm thinking bulky = pricey........ i'll try the switch first assuming i can get access as it seems to be in the bowls of the front with numerous pipes in the way!

Just had a price from Porsche Shop..... 'They are a double relay and £126.00 plus vat.' GULP! Fingers crossed it's the switch as that was £25

by default the relay coil is de-energised so without a 12v+ supply to earth the relay cannot activate and switch the fans on. I would first check that the rad thermoswitch hasn't gone closed circuit. If you remove the connector to the radiator temp switch the fan should switch off as the relay contacts return to normal off state. Unless the relay contacts are stuck in the closed position the relay should be fine. Its easy to remove the relay can cover and check the relay operation using a 9v+ battery

Which is still £8 more than OPC!!!!

So........ replaced the thermofan switch and fan still staying on. That was the cheap part so next the relay switched this morning. Guess what, the damn fan is still on! So i'm sitting here with two relays so at least i can arm the alarm and immobiliser and not knowing what to do next. Any clues?

Simon I have been looking through all my electrical schematics and haven't found much that helps yet I'm afraid. It looks like the G10 relay also controls all the heater and A/C flaps so its quite complicated . I think something must be wired up incorrectly on your car because the thermoswitch you replaced is what controls your radiator fan. If its working correctly it should be open circuit when the engine is cold and should close when it reaches the correct temperature therby switching on the fan. The fan motor is constantly live and is fed directly from the battery through fuse 7 (7.5A) The other side of the fan goes to the thermoswitch When the thermoswitch closes it simply connects your fan motor to earth at earthing point MPlll . This has to mean that your radiator fan is being earthed somewhere else other than through the thermoswitch . Either by a short or because someone has tried to re-wire your fan supply because of this problem before. I'll keep looking for a better schematic that shows the internals of the relay then I will see exactly how yours could be malfunctioning has your car got a working air/con ?

Hi Nick Thanks for the reply. My car has got aircon but not working and not investigated as to why not. I've been having the car serviced by Jon Mitchell and his hunch was it was likely to be more than a simple regas. Think i'm actually going to just pop the car into Jon's place in a couple of weeks as he's probably quite familiar with the problem. I've had the car 2 and a half years and this has only happened in the last month but........ my local garage fitted the thermoswitch and i'm now wondering if they've managed to earth it incorrectly. Cheers Simon

the rad sensor has a 2x pin electrrical connector so there is nothing to earth . You just screw the sensor into the rad and re-connect the connector ...job done. The reason I asked you about air/con is that if it is fitted and turned on one of the fans will stay on continuously to cool the refridge unit . I am not sure if the relay will operate your A/C fan if the A/C system is switched on but not working. Have you tried making sure that the A/C switch on the heater control is turned off ?

heres a schematic from Pelican that I have modified . I can email if you wish (375kb)
