Cooling fan with manual switch

New member
Had a search but couldn't find anything where an owner has had a car with a manual switch put in (mine is under the steering wheel, just a general cheapo switch on/off) and i'm wanting to get rid of it and use the standard relay/switch, is this the right thing to buy first? (Fan switch)

Hi Adam,

The relay is the relay, the fan switch is the one in the rad. It depends which failed, and why there was a manual switch installed in the first place.

It's commonly the rad switch that breaks, and people pull the relay as that's an easy way to stop the fans running after the car is turned off, running the battery down.

The rad switch is a common point of failure as it has a little wax capsule in it which expands when it gets hot and pushes two electrical contacts together, making the circuit. However this means there are moving parts, which fatigue over time (commonly the wax capsule leaks a little meaning it won't expand enough to make the contacts touch each other and hence the switch fails.)

You'll have the added hassle of chasing the wiring to the original switch and undoing the butchery that was necessary to put the dashboard switch in. It won't be difficult, but will take time.

If you require the relay then the best place to buy it from is Porsche themselves, you'll probably find it is a fair bit cheaper too!

The fan switch itself is easily available anywhere (ECP, Car Parts 4 Less, GSF, Type911, Design 911, Porsche) so just buy from the most convenient/cheapest
 
If you can tell me which relay number it is then I'll have a look at the one in my S2. There is an outside chance it's a standard automotive switching relay, in which case it should be less than a fiver from your local motor factors ...

But I stand by my comments that it's more likely to be the waxstat switch which has given up the ghost.

Remember that there are two fan switches - 2 pin for the early cars and 3 pin for the later cars. Make sure you buy the right one!
 
Thanks for the replies, I have no diea why it has the manual switch in so i will just have to go with trial and error.

I've ordered the fan switch from 911shop as i've dealt with them before and the prices are very reasonable for OEM parts, should arrive this week sometime. Will trace back the manual switch wire too and get rid of that when the new fan switch comes, i've looked under the passenger footwell and it's not very pretty (seems to be a lot of diy wiring going on) :(
