Cooling fan

Just found this on renntech.org, and as just had the same happen to me I was wondering if anyone has come across it on here ?

"I have followed this site since since 2005 and now I have a question! I have a MY06 997S cab and for the first time I heard loud fan noise coming from the right front when I pulled up. What surprises me is that I have never heard it before, particularly as the journey was not at great speed or excessive temperature. My question how come its never switched on in 3 years and why now?"

"Was you car just serviced by a Porsche Dealer?

If so, they may have performed a factory required update that may be your reason for hearing the right front fan.

My Porsche Dealer performed this factory maintenance the last time I brought my car in for a normal oil change.

Now, the front right fan comes on almost all the time. And it's loud! I never heard this fan come on before, until I had this update done on my car.

Others may know what I'm trying to explain. It has something to do with the software that controls the engine and cooling fans?"

Any thoughts ?

I initially this fault, but it turned out to be a fan in the opposite wing had jammed. OP repaired this and then performed the dreaded s/ware upgrade, I now have a fan kicking in much more regularily and also my oil temp runs a lot higher than before. Porsche have confirmed by letter to me that they accept the higher oil temp as being within spec'! Cheers Paul

Hannu, mine was done about a year back, and one of our R17 members had it done just before our WOTY last year as well, and he experienced higher oil running temp and also the offside fan kicking in more often. I believe that the s/ware upgrade is done when you take your car in for a service visit, it is not a recall type of issue. Cheers Paul

Workshop campaign W731 deactivates the engine cooling fan slow speed. Why this is done nobody at my PC knew.

I am hearing that once this "update" has been applied owners are finding that the O/S fan is kicking in more often (never heard mine before) but also the N/S fans are found to be seized. One wonders if the "update" is to get the fans running more often so they don't seize ? [&:] The pessimist in me thinks that Porsche could have been paying out some large warranty claims due to the fans not kicking in when they should ! [;)] I have looked up service campaign W731 on the net to find its an "urgent recall" in the U.S. [link=http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?/topic/20651-urgent-recall-w731/page__p__106583__hl__W731%20__fromsearch__1&#entry106583]http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?/topic/20651-urgent-recall-w731/page__p__106583__hl__W731%20__fromsearch__1&#entry106583[/link]
