993 RS Register October 2001 edition. Highclere Seemed to be a great success, we had 9 cars on our register enclosure area which is a encouraging turn out considering its a fifth of all UK cars imported! Including some German guests who also had a good day at silverstone on the track day. On a sad note, my GT2 was on the top lawn along with another GT2 and the blue GTR600. Of which I decided luckily to take my car to my tent, instead of leaving it on the lawn all night. When we arrived back at the lawn in the morning, some vandal had decided to scratch both the GT2 & the GTR driver doors. What is the matter with people, it was not even my cars, but it wound me up big time. Do people not realise how hard we work to get these cars and look after them as if it were the crown jewels. It gives us great pleasure normally to show these cars and for you to enjoy, but it seems sadly that it must have been a club member on the Saturday night! On a brighter note. We are off to Spa and the ring for a autumn blast with wheel Tourque, we have four cars going so far, any one else interested in coming along if there any places left by this time. We leave on the 3rd of November for Spa, then the 5&6 on the ring, and return home on the 7 or 8 depending on what German car specialist we might visit on our return. JRZ,s I have been trying to sort a compromise with my suspension set up, and have decided to fit triple adjustable Dampers and leaving the standard springs on. This is to enable me to stiffen the car right up for sprinting and soften back off for hillclimbing and road use with out any jack up from harder springs. This seems to be working well so far, very impressed with the turn in, and the stability of the car on circuit. They were time consuming for myself to fit, I also needed to check out the geometry so Shaun from D ick Lovetts fitted my car in at short notice for a full geometry set up ready for the sprint the following week end. I would recommend a geometry check every couple of years, or regular track days check the settings every year, the pope at dick lovetts (John Paul) is very capable of this as he looks after the set up of a GT3R that Lovett's support. Colin from 930 set the car up before I disturbed all the settings fitting the Jrz, s, he had done a excellent job also, Just putting the car back to factory setting plus a few motor sport tweaks to enable the car to turn in a little quicker Sintered Clutch's I have fitted a sintered Paddle clutch to see if it will last longer than my last clutch, which was only about 3000miles +a lot of hillclimb starts, the disadvantage is the clutch is all or nothing and hideous for the road, don't let any one tell you different. They are fantastic for track use and a little harsh for hill climbing. I have now found a paddle clutch with torsional damper springs that will be a little more forgiving on take up, especially in the wet! And even better, I am researching into the use of double & triple plate clutchs, more anon on this one. The clutch on the 993 has a cooling system fitted, which is basically a pipe going to the air filter box and draws air through the bell housing, 993 seem to be quite heavy on the clutch. The disadvantage of this is the air filter gets heavily soiled if you are using the clutch sportingly and should be regularly cleaned. Just a point of interest, I changed the clutch myself this time by taking just the gearbox out. This was fiddly to say the least and would be a lot easier to drop the engine and box together, especially when it comes to assembly of the release fork mechanism. Values RS, s seemed to have crept up over the last year, in Germany and UK, one UK car just changed Hands for £58k,one owner and 20k miles, new owner very pleased may be it has something to do with the Autocar review of the top 100 cars ever produced, and the 993 RS was second to the Maclaren F1.Do I need to sat any more! Porsche are not going to make any cars like this again, so hang on to them or certainly don't give them away. I was a little disappointed with the 993 GT2 being well back on the ratings, seems like the journalist did not like Porsches, and clearly scared himself! Also there is always the opportunity to write an article on some subject, ie on wheels, tyres, exausts, or even manufacturers/tuners wild claims to easy extra BHP! Or good service that's worth a mention. Just let me no if you require some writing space For ever Lightweight Paul Howells

Well , you got it right with 993RS values [:D] .....and interesting to see Vic's name in the list. Good reading

Very interesting Paul [;)]

I read that the 993RS has a ventilated clutch --- which is why I am guessing that I can smell clutch when "stepping" quickly off the line.

This does not happen with a 964RS ( -- and actually, I am quite kind to clutches) . Honest ! [;)]

I have copy of that Autocar 'Top 100 Cars Of All Time' issue. I persuaded Haymarket to part with one of their Library copies as it is my car photographed in the article. My daughters love telling their school friends that their dad has the second best car of all time....the ACTUAL second best car of all time!
