Correct waterpump

Hi all

I’m helping a friend out with his S2 and he is looking to replace his water pump.

However, The one he bought from euros doesn’t seem quite right. Specifically, the thermostat, which refused to seat.

On inspection we noticed that the groove where the circlip sits was lower than the one on the new one. Having conducted some research, Clarks Garage say older pump circlip sits 4mm and later ones 7mm from the base.

in summary, has anyone bought a waterpump recently with the larger impeller and correct thermostat seating? If so would really appreciate a recommendation on brand and where it was purchased .

Many thanks

Pete

Didn't know that fact. I got one from ECP recently and it turned up with the hole for the coolant elbow sealed over. They re-sent one with an aperture and the 2 required bolt holes.

The thermostats can be really fiddly to fit using the correct rubber seal and metal shim (well, in situ anyway in a turbo, the S2 has more leeway), but if there are 2 different types you probably have the wrong one.

I'm sure the turbo and S2 share a pump but PET lists 944 106 021 24 for M44.11/12/41 (which I think is S2 engine) and 951 106 021 10 for turbo. I'm sure all series 2 cars can use the turbo pump though. I'm sure someone will confirm this!

Might help you a bit.

Thanks Stuart

Much appreciated. They also sent us the wrong thermostat seal which should have been the one that slips around the edge of the thermostat. What came was a simple rubber o ring which sits under and is an earlier type apparently.

Thanks again.

Not good! Thermostat seal is 944 106 929 08. A couple of quid from Porsche. I got mine from Porsche, ECP didn't supply it. They did supply the thermostat which was fine. You should also have a metal shim that goes between the stat and circlip, 900 234 160 00.

There is also another part that I bought from Porsche, that I didn't need. A sealing ring that looking at the parts diagram, sits between the pump and the stat, 951 106 055 00. Maybe this takes up the play in the 3mm difference between the two types of pump? I certainly didn't need it as my stat sat firmly in the right place without it. I just needed the seal, shim and circlip.

Thanks Stuart

Appreciate your thoughts on this.

We are off to buy a pump next week so I’ll keep you posted.

Thanks again

Pete

I have a long reach circlip plier set with interchangeable tips including right & 45 deg angled tips.
Makes the thermostat removal/replacement so much easier especially if you check the groove edges & use a little Vaseline in the recess.
I also use a small mirror to check everythings goesin fully & square, etc.

Pumps with the smaller impeller are for small bore blocks - all 2.5 engines
Pumps with the larger impeller are for big bore blocks - 2.7 and 3.0 engines.

In my experience all new pumps come already fitted with "sealing ring" #2 on the diagram.
