Corrosion warranty - door catch

This is probably an old chestnut for many, but I only purchased my 1998 996 a year ago.

There is much in the literature about rust developing around the door catches. I have this problem on the passenger side door and recently took the issue up with my local Porsche garage. They have been advised that my car is past some five year 'goodwill' date and that the work cannot be carried out under the corrosion warranty. My response to this was a simple 'a warranty is a warranty' (10 years?)! The car has a full PMDSH.

Have others succeeded where so far I am failing? I have taken it up with Porsche GB customer services and they are reporting back.

As I'm sure you've read, this problem was resolved by the fitment of a plastic gasket under the base plate of the catch assy in order to prevent flexing from causing cracking of the paint coating and hence allowing the onset of corrosion.

As your car has a FPMDSH, this modification should have been carried out by the OPC during a routine service.

Check to see if any gaskets have been fitted.

As the corrosion is a direct result of damage due to this design fault, I would argue that it should be covered under your 10 year paint warranty and would stand your ground.

Good Luck.

Many thanks for your encouragement. I am still awaiting feedback from Reading, even though they promised it by today! I do not give up easily however.

All the best,

Graham
