Anyone help out with the correct pricing for a 1990 964 with 84500 miles ??. Its in good all round condition the major thing with it is that the engine is burning a touch of oil so it needs at least a top end overhaul. If I allow £2500 to £3000 for this I think I should be OK. Asking price is £13500. Any suggestions ?

I think a little more info reqd:-
Is it C2 or C4, Coupe'--Targa--Cabriolet.
Manual or Tiptronic
Full history
Colour
Recent expenditure
£13.5 + £3k = £16.5 as a minimum, I believe that you could find an exceptional full history car [coupe'] for £22k from a retailer and £18k from a private seller so therefor assuming no added expenditure over the £3k top end is reqd £13.5 is not such a bargain I'm afraid
Just IMHO

Bryan,
You don't say whether the car is LHD or RHD?? On the assumption you probably WOULD have said if it were LHD I'll assume for the moment that it's RHD.
If it's burning oil, again I'm assuming, you can see blue smoke from the exhaust?? If not, it may just be leaking it.
If it IS burning the oil you are probably looking at more than a top end rebuild. The top end generally concentrates on the heads and valves rather than the pistons, rings and cylinders. Your budget assumption of £2500 - £3000 is probably a little light - most independants seems to quote around £3500, and more if it's necessary to split the crankcase.
I have to say that my views are NOT based on experience (as yet) - merely gathered intelligence - so it's likely others will chime in with more factual opinions.
As far as price is concerned I've been getting the impression that 964 prices of late seem to be going down although there are huge discrepancies between dealer prices and private sales as there always are. If it were me looking at the car I would want a decent pre purchase inspection done to eliminate any other major concerns before getting too close to a price. 964s have a capability to land you with some pretty massive costs for apparently quite insignificant problems. A 24K service on my own car recently turned into a £2000 event once issues like drive belts, battery leads, suspension bushes, brake pipes and headlamps were accounted for.
Assuming the service history is less than complete (why else would it be burning oil after only 84000 miles?) I'm guessing a PPI is likely to turn up a few other things. Decide on a price once you have more detail.
Hope that helps.
Regards
Dave

Bryan,
Well it's got something going for it in terms of value. The coupe is generally reckoned to be the best seller, white is a common colour (maybe not the best loved) and manuals are better liked than tips.
The last owner doesn't sound the best of news - I presume you have some details of how much mileage he covered since 2001. Given that oil changes should be done at least yearly I'd hope that in those 4 years he didn't use it much!!! If that's the case I'd worry about the health of oil seals and bearings - likely to be very dry if not used. Likely to be knackered if it was!! The rubber oil pipes tend to suffer with lack of use too.
I think the PPI has got to be the next logical step if you're otherwise really keen on it. I think everything you've said so far is heading the price down rather than up!!!

Hi Hannu
The fact that it`s white ought to get you a few quid off as its currently"unfashionable" and dealers will have told the vendor the same.
Current owner doesn`t sound very sympathetic to the cars` requirements, which might be a clue to its condition.
let us know how it goes, as I`m in the market for one as well.
regards,
jr.
