Cost of a 944 turbo in 1986

Hi all

I recently bid on an ebay item that gives the costs of all Porsches when new in 1986, some very interesting prices that may surprise you. Ok so my car is 1986 which is why I bid on the item , I already new that it cost £33k , so much for a poor mans Porsche ( I bought a house in 1986 that cost me £26k..lol) but it's interesting when compared to other cars in the range.
Some prices for you to look at, these are the price for the basic car including car tax and VAT but not including any options, btw i have a complete list for option prices too.

There are more prices with such things as sport equipment which is basically what the LE is although the broucher describes it as a sports package but the drawing has the LE wings hence why I labeled as such.

I think you'll agree all cars in the range were far from a poor mans car and the 944 turbo was in fact more expensive than the humble 911 carrera, as for which car was better value for money well I think we all know the answer to that as did the road tests of the day.... the 944 was the better car in every conceivable way.... read the road tests guys... but hey.. shssss don't tell everyone.....[:)][:)]

Probably worse for the 928, its about 50% more on that list price then the 951 or 911, but now probably similar value to an equally sound 951 which are both probably 1/2 the value of an equally sound 911.

I have never understood the poor mans thing as the 3.2 carrera has only become much more valuable then the 944 range in the past few years. When I originally bought my S2 it was difficult to find a decent car for less then 10 grand, certainly 9K was the starting point for the turbo and carrera 3.2 a touch more. Fast forward 9 years and it seems carrara 3.2's and SC's cost more or less the same, maybe more for the better or rarer examples.

924 does equal poor mans Porsche though, lets be honest and the problem is the 944 got tared with the same brush due to the resemblance. Maybe for the turbo and S2 Porsche should have made it look substantially different, much like they did with the 968 and given it a different model number. The most shocking thing about that price list is the huge difference between a basic 944 and the turbo, given the 2 cars the same model number was a home goal for Porsche.
 
Awaits deluded (and plain WRONG) 944 Turbo owner trying to kid us he has a 952 (usually with a smug 'I know more than you' wink).
 
Interesting to compare with the current price list where a Boxster is £33k and a 911 Turbo £99k!

Puts the whole thing in perspective!
 
ISTR my 968 was about £42K list, can't recall what the 2.5 Boxster started at but I am fairly sure it was much less, nearer £30K.
 
I dug out an Autocar and Motor from Aug '89 tonight to see if they had prices in...to my surprise their main feature is a test to find Britain's best handling car!
The contenders are:
Ferrari 328
Renault 5 GT Turbo
Pug 405 Mi16
Toyota MR2
Lancia Integrale
Porsche 944 S2
Merc 190E 2.5 16
VW Corrado
BMW 535i Sport

And the winner is........the 944 of course!

 

No surprise there then Jeremy... there are many road tests during the 944's era against all types of machinery... 944 best of course and was the yardstick for others to try and match.
I've driven some of those cars on the list including the Ferrari 328GTS... it was fun and had a lovely engine sound being just behind your head, but it was slow, very bad handling and as for the build quality??? don't even go there... a Morris Marina would be a better built car and that's saying something...lol

Some would say the 944 era never finished and the compeditors are still today trying to match it... I put Porsche thenselves in that group too[8D]

Pete, yes even in the article they say that the Porsche is old, but it was in a league of it's own compard to the rest. They saifd that the 328 had to be driven like a 911, slow in, fast out.
The Corrado came out as best FWD by a country mile
