Cost of Mobil 1

Just had my 997 Gen 2 turbo serviced for the first time, minor service, 2 years, 8k miles.

Came to £718 at PC Swindon and included brake fluid change. What surprised me was the cost of the engine oil - 2 * 2.5l Mobil 1 @ £69.15 each + VAT, making the cost of the oil £166.

Sounds a lot. What do you think and what is your experience?

I presume that's 2 x 5L Mark, not 2.5 L! Even so very pricey. Don't know about Swindon but mine are very happy for me to supply my own oil @ around £40 per 5L. Seems a fairly common practice. Seems quite reasonable otherwise. Have they done your turbo exhaust gas sensors? There is a "campaign" to replace them on the early cars.

I brought my own Mobil 1 oil for my last oil change at the OPC. 10L cost me under 80 quid at Halfords and an oil change only uses 8L so have 2L left over. Know from bitter experience that OPCs change crazy prices for oil so always take my own.

Seems all main dealers rip you off on the price of oil compared to what you'd pay at Halfords or Costco - I've seen similar comments on MB forums, and more people these days supplying their own oil when having their car serviced - and saving a lot of money as a result. Why do main dealers do this? All it does is generate ill feeling towards main dealer servicing, and makes us look more and more to the independant specialist.

When my OPC accidentally threw away my spare 2L from the 2x5L containers i supplied they replaced them with 2x1L containers.

So perhaps OPCs only buy 1L containers and thus the price per L is higher?

Mine also places a new 1 ltr bottle in the frunk and a bottle of Porsche screenwash both usually low down on the bill![]

Just had my car serviced took my own oil mobil 1 10 litres from Costco £60
Opc put left over oil in my car when I got home checked invoice they had charged me for 1 litre of oil when I raised this issue they said they always leave 1litre of oil in the car-I informed them that the oil they left in my car was my own oil credit back for charge of oil

Sorry, yes, it was for 2 @ 5l, not 2.5l as I said. Too late now but I will take my own oil next time.

Alan, they didn't do the gas sensors but did do the centre lock recall and put the steering wheel on straight. Amazing what a difference it makes to driving the car!

They didn't stamp up my book so I have to send it back to them - service, brake fluid change and, supposedly, the 2 year body condition report.

halfords do indeed-picked up 2 5l for £69 yesterday evening.thanks for the headsup gary

I would give them a call about the exhaust gas sensors Mark. They should be replaced under warranty as part of the "campaign"

Been stung on this one more than once. I've even bought 8 litres of Esso with the same rating as Mobil 1 and left it in the boot and asked Sinters in Towcester to use this. They didn't as it wasn't Mobil 1.
My girlfriend has a petrol card which allows her to buy oil. I've taken her car, a RS60 Boxster to be serviced with 8 litres of Mobil 1, left a note on the dashboard to make the mechanic aware there is oil in the boot and found the same unused in the boot.
Mobil 1 seems to be quite tricky to find and of course its pretty expensive in petrol stations.
I found Costco selling Mobil 1 recently. Its a lot cheaper.

Best bet is buy before hand and insist they use the Mobil 1 you supply or you refuse to pay.

Try OpieOils. Good prices and reliable. Bought y Mobil 1 there and gave it (plus filter and washer) to my OPC.
