Could this be serious?

I have a '98 996 with 95k on the clock. Following an enthusiastic track day on Saturday, I noticed minor oil splatters up the back bumper and engine cover, and oil pressure sitting at around 3.75 @ 4krevs. There are no pools on the garage floor, no smoking or clunking and no apparent performance loss. Might it be a sign of failing oil rings? Any other ideas?

I've booked it in for investigation on Friday, but should I be worried?

Hi Jon. It could be that your RMS is weeping and that your outing at the track made the situation worse - lots of high revs and speed, I'm guessing? You might not have noticed the leak under 'normal' driving conditions. You wouldn't have lost enough oil to drop the oil pressure reading but is there any strong smell of burning oil or has the clutch felt as though it might be slipping a bit? Are the oil splatters around the exhausts or towards the middle of the bumper?

This might be a long shot but is there any way that you might have run over or come in to contact with someone else's oil leak or large oil patch on the track?

Hi Adrian
Thanks for the response. The distribution is general and very fine. My first thought was that I'd picked it up off the track, but no signs on other cars.
I notice that the oil filler tube is a bit wet, and I'm wondering now if a small split could account for the leak. As for RMS, that is a clear possibility, but it's not yet so bad as to mark the garage floor.
No clutch smell, no slipping or juddering.
I'll know on Friday!
Regards
Jon

Well, just got the car back after very minor corrective surgery. The oil was coming from a perished bellows to the breather canister towards the front n/s of the engine. RMS dry -yippee.
