Coupe v Cab

Ok would be interested to hear from people who have moved from a coupe to a cab or vice versa and what you felt were the pro's and cons.

Not interested in loss of structural rigidity on track etc, but more what it is like to live with a cab.

On looks:-

Had a Targa SSE though it was a 3.2 carrera, and just really did not like the big back window and roll bar, though the 993 version is quite nifty. I bought this because it had a Paxton supercharger and 380bhp!!

Had a 993 Cab for a month, and a 968 Cab for two months, the 968 was just too slow being a tptronic and both cars with there throw back covers look dated and scruffy and only a little bit better with the tonnue covers on if you can be bothered.

The coupe just looks lovely with the sweeping rear quarters, this is the looker IMO.

I have an SLK 32 AMG as a soft top and its a great car.

Functional:-

The converibles are quite bufferty a speed without a wind deflecter and hoods that are unbolted rather than fully auto so again showing there age. I changed to a coupe because the convertible looks some what dumpy!!

All cars are great though, its horses for courses.

 
I had a 964 C2 Coupe, then a 964 C2 Cab, then a 993 C2 Coupe, then a 993 C2 Cab, then a 996 3.4 C2 Coupe, then a 996 3.6 C2 Coupe ....all bought new.

To be honest the Coupe variants are better cars and probably age better. IMO the Coupe looks best and the Cab looks better with the roof up than down. Cab rear seat backs are too vertical and not comfortable even for children. Cabs tend to suffer from more rattles (which you hear when the roof is up) and slight scuttle shake (improved with later models).

However, when it's warm, drop the roof and the flat-six sounds awesome and, with the wind deflector, it's pretty comfortable.

But, IMO, £ for £ the best open Porsche is the Boxster 'S' - a dedicated purpose built mid-engine roadster. And with nice examples for c.£20,000(ish), this would be my recommendation. In fact I'd buy a Boxster 'S' over a 996 Cab.
 
I would not take a Boxter over any 993 unless i was a girl.

Yes there are anoying rattles in the cabs and i cant live with rattles.

My wifes Slk which she was going to change for a Boxter S is a superb and very rapid cab, its faster than my 993 by some!

If you like the sound of the engines and want more noise in a coupe get a Fabspeed exhaust and De-cat pipes and bloody hell, everyone with a Cab will here you!!

 
I had a 964 Coupe until March 2003 and then changed over to my 993 Cab. Yes there are more rattles and somehow the doors don't feel as though they quite fit properly when the roof is down! But the feeling of driving along a narrow country road at speed with the roof down and that beautiful 993 growl uppermost in your hearing makes everything worthwhile. I love it!
