Couple of 993 newbie questions!

Hi folks....

Just a couple of questions from a 996 convert!

1) Should the 'Engine Check' light illuminate when turning ignition on? Mine doesn't although all the others pretty much do!

2) Oil consumption. I reckon mine has done half a litre of mobile one in 500 miles or so - does that sound excessive for a 12 year old car? There are no oil patches on the garage floor...

Many thanks in advance for any answers provided!

Hi congratulations on your new toy.

All the warning lights should come on as a bulb checlk when you key on the ignition.

Oil consumption does appear to be a smidge high. However, this could be due to seeral reasons; I find if you fill it towards the top mark of the dipstick or gauge it tend to consume more oil than if you fill it to the mid point on the gauge.

Hope this helps.

Mark,

The "Check Engine" light is not wired up for UK cars except the Turbo, so everything is working as it should!

As Pickled Piper says, the oil consumption is a little high. What viscosity oil are you using? Maybe you need something a little thicker, or it could be that the oil wasn't that high when you first had it. Did you check the level when you bought it?

I don't think a litre of oil per 1,000 miles is terribly excessive if you've been wellying it. Keep an eye on it and see how it is when the "new toy" factor wears off a bit. Having said that it may take a while, I've had mine for over 7 years and it's still not worn off.

If, however, you've been driving like Miss Daisy then I'ld be worried if I were you.

You need to look at oil comsumption over a longer distance than 500 miles - I'm monitoring my miles-per-litre and it's very varied over short distances - although it's very tough to tell because dipstick check conditions have to be identical.

I agree with Pickled Piper that the top half of the dipstick range seems to get used faster than the bottom half. (But I've not done much experimentation).
