Couple of technical questions regarding engine removal/installation

for those of you that get your hands dirty ?

1. How do you remove the oil sensor level from the sump on a 951 ? Does the sensor come out completely or does it unclip and that way you can remove the wiring harness ?

2. Reinstalling the engine, exhaust manifolds on or off ? If off, can you refit them with the studs in place ?

thanks

Chris (20 mins from removing the 951 engine.....)

Just out of interest- are you removing the engine from above or below?? The Haines manual says remove from below.

BTW- please post pictures and some description as to how you got on!

WIll do, once I get to the stage of actually taking it out !

I'm at the stage where the block (cam tower & head off already) is suspended at the front by an engine/gearbox bar and supported from underneath via the sump at the back.

Next step, remove the rest of the wiring harness - hence the question regarding the level sensor, attach the engine crane and out we go.....

Not forgetting to remove the 4 bolts that hold the bellhousing to the torque tube !

When you re install your engine put the manifolds on first. I tried fitting my engine with the manifolds off and had a VERY torrid time.

thanks for the advice. The engine has now been out for ~ 2 weeks and the block is on an engine stand.

Do you know how bleeding heavy a 951 crankshaft is ?

C

Yep, I do!

With the engine on a stand I used an engine crane to support and gently lower the crank in for checking bearings etc. It sounds like overkill, but it was a hell of a lot easier.

Regards,

Tref.
