Cracked bore liner....

Just a curio on this, not a symptom I'm suffering from but I saw a bargain cabrio with a cracked liner for sale - still runs (well for a bit anyway).

Guess its a rebuild on the engine, so that's gotta be 5K starting position - or is there a liner only fix option for a single cylinder I wonder?

Also what is there a knock on damage implication for a cracked liner (excepting the obvious piston issues)?

Any thoughts?

Think I saw the same car advertised online last week.

I would like to know how they have diagnosed the fault with evidence of an inspection report. It would require a strip down and I believe new liners can be installed, but you would need to check with a specialist.

Early diagnosis should be repairable, but it could lead to failure if cylinder wall breaks apart. Symptoms? Loss of power, possible oil/water contamination and maybe blue smoke on start-up and acceleration. It would require a trailer on purchase to lessen any risks on the way home!

Phone the guys at Hartech

This is a minimum 7 k job but a previous person said it would need a full strip down

I have a similar problem.
They have to drop the engine and remove the Heads which is going to cost about 2k + Vat including rebuild

New Heads 2k each minimum

Thanks for that chaps - not going ahead anyway (well not today anyway!).

Richardjjs, appreciate you are a big Hartech fan, and their reputation is excellent, but there are other repairers out there as well, not as expensive either!

I tend to fly the flag for Autofarm in Oxford and Northway in Reading - both know their stuff!
