cracked coil packs

Just got my car back from the dealer £1065 lighter for a 48k service....apart from nearly fainting at the cost theyve told me that ive got cracked coil packs and need replacing at a cost of around £200. Told them to shove it as i will go to my local indi specialist to get it done if its really necessary, the thing is, I aint too sure what they are?

Anyone care to enlighten me and advise whether this is an urgent job?

It's a fairly common occurence on 996 and Boxster engines, ususlly resulting in a misfire. They cost about £24 each from eurocarparts.com. There is one coil pack on each spark plug, and they tend to corrode and split. If you haven't got a misfire then there isn't a huge rush, but you will need to get it done - especially with winter coming.

your OPC will charge about £100 each - you should be budgetting for getting all of them replaced within the next 12 motnhs, if one is failing the others wont be far behind

I replaced mine last year at Strasse - cost about £120. Strasse's advice was you could wait and see if they misfire, and then repalce them. I replaced them straight way - the car was in for a service anyway.

Are they fairly easy to fit?
My 996 was mis-firing at Brands earlier today and it felt like coil breakdown.

Thanks

Malcolm

two of mine have cracked as well. OPC told me when i had my 111 point check done for the warranty. Shame i had to have them done there, but I'll get the others changed by Zentrum in Notts when i next go over
