cracked pipes

For christmas I treated myself to one of those 'sporty' cone type air filters which I fitted last night. When I removed the old air filter box I noticed a small pipe attached to the back of it , this pipe goes toward the oil tank so I assume it is a breather but I am unsure wether to leave it open(as it is at the moment) or to block it off. Anyone know what I should do?
Also while I had my head under the engine cover I noticed a couple of black pipes that are looking very old and cracked. I dont know what they are for but they run from the back of the engine up and across behind the air filter then one connects to the plate where the oil filter screws on and I think the other connects to the oil filler stem. What are they for ? If I take them off will oil spill out everywhere? and what are they called so I can order a couple of new ones.

with regard to the black pipes, i think they are vacuum pipes, if the are cracked as you say, they have probably gone porous, and will effect the running of your car.

I would hope someone here can get back to you who has access to a bentley manual who may be able to confim this or provide you a link to a relevant diagram.

If all else fails, you could visit your local OPC parts dept, who can bring the engine bay up on screen to identify the pipes you refer to.

good luck

Did my filter last year, the pipe in question is the breather pipe from the charcoal fillter off the fuel tank,
I put a small filter on the end see picture, I got this off ebay for a few £
The other pipes if the ones you are looking at are about 30mm dia, one runs from the top of the engine and the other one from the back of the air rubber intake both to the oil tank.
Thay take fumes/gasses from the engine and tank, I made some SS pipes up at the same time as I did the air filter as you can see
I would not leave them off you will get oil on the engine

Thanks for the advice guys, Graham I like the look of the SS pipes you fitted and the extra filter is good way to tidy up that pipe I left off. I dont have easy acess to a SS welder so will probably continue looking on line for some rubber ones. By the way four engine bay looks great hope you didnt go to the trouble of cleaning it up just to post me the pic.!!![:D]

I just had problem starting my car and the problem were these pipes.

Tower Porsche replaced them at the cost of £22 each plus VAT. And they were from the local Porsche dealer.

Thanks Neil I will contact the porsche centre in Belfast tomorrow to get the pipes. By the way what problems were you getting with the cracked pipes cos my car seems to run sweetly although I am new to porsche ownership and may not notice a lack of power or excess noise for example, I am wanting to replace them just because they are cracked.[&:]

The car ran well in the summer, but would cut out in the Winter when cold. Once hot she would tick over fine.

Due to the cracked pipes the car was taking in too much air. Since then economy and performance is alot beter. Also the car will tick over nicely now.
