Cracks in discs on 991.2 Carrera S

Hello folks,

Just been swapping my wheels over and giving the arches etc a good clean. I've noticed *all* my discs have what appears to be small cracks emanating from the ventilation holes. Is this normal?

Cheers,

Mark,

It's not unknown to experience your problem with the cross-drilled discs. Depending upon how worn the discs are [you can see the ridge at the disc edge] it may be a good idea to replace them in the not too distant future to avert a potential catastrophic failure, remote though that may be.

Do you use the car on track? You'll notice that quite a few of the holes are blocked and - although it's a bit of a faff - it's not a bad idea to clear-out the holes on occasion, such as when you're swapping the wheels around. Just run a drill through the holes, but don't go in too far otherwise you'll hit the back-plate.

Radial cracking is quite common with drilled rotors and results from the continual heating and cooling. However, you need to be careful to check if any extend to the outer circumference as this would necessitate replacement.

If you are using the vehicle for normal road driving, they should be fine for a while yet. Those partially drilled indentations are wear indicators and you appear to have plenty of metal remaining. But, if you are intending to track the car or indulge in high performance motoring in the future, replacement of the damaged rotors would be advisable.

Regards,

Clive
