Crank shaft seal

How do you change the crank seal on a 944 then? I'm finding the clarks garage giude too vague. Ive got as far as removing the woodruff key which is being stubborn. Theres a loose washer behind that and then the same kind of seal thats on the balance shafts. It looks like theres a panel you can remove on the front of the engine.

Ive done the camshaft and both balance shaft seals now so unless its a mammoth effort I might as well do the crank as well. I had a horrible thought that I might have to have the bottom balance shaft housing off to do the crank seal. I do hope thats not the case :p.

Behind the large washer is a rubber o ring - replace this on reassembly. You will want to pull out the oil pump drive gear check for wear on this - there may well be a groove which will stop the new crank seal sealing - I think the drive gear is about £30.
With the gear removed the crank seal can be prised out.

The panel you talked about is the oil pump - do not loosen those bolts you dont want to break the seal.

I used a pair of electrical side cutters to grip the key parrallel to the crank then pivoted the cutters against the end of the crank. (if that makes sense).
I did this with the engine out so had alot more room to work but I think you would have room if the fan housing is out of the way.
