crankshaft help

HI all, the big end bearing has gone on my 997 and apparently the crankshaft on journal 3 is beyond repair, i am not a mechanic but the car is now in bits as a garage took it apart and couldnt put it back together again for me! can anyone help as i currently have a box of bits ! chris
 
What the hell is a garage doing taking something apart they can't either fix OR put back together! I'm assuming they said they could do it in order to get this far!? FFS

depending on where in the country you are this will cost you a boat load. The numpties who've got it in bits will add insult to injury by charging for the time they've spent making a mess before they release it, then you're looking at getting to somewhere like Hartech or Autofarm to confirm the diagnosis and repair it.

This has made me so cross!
 
I wouldn't become too disheartened. It's unlikely the crank is completely scrap just because of one damaged journal, since specialist machine shops can often reclaim them by re-cutting the journal and fitting an oversize bearing or even adding metal to the journal and re-machining.
But it's important to establish the cause of the failure in the first place. It's an unusual defect in a 997.
It's not the end of the world if a new crank is needed, but it's best to weigh up the most economic method of repair in the first instance and Hartech is a good source of specialist knowledge is such matters.

It sounds like this garage don't know what they are talking about so don't take their diagnosis seriously.

Where in the country is your car so we can best direct you to a garage that does.
 
Well as a mechanic myself, I think it really depends on your discussion with the garage before they pulled apart your engine. It is totally normal practice to strip out an engine in order to be able to find out the amount of wear and damage that the crankshaft has suffered and these types of diagnostic work is not always reversible. After all why would anyone want the engine reassembled with damaged bearings and a journal. If the bearing has spun around in side the big end cap this could cause extensive journal damage and make the crank UN repairable. If you stopped running your engine as soon as you noticed the strange noises coming from it then you might get away with a crankshaft regrind. But if there are lots of metal contamination in the engine then you would be looking at a complete engine strip down, clean out and rebuild.
Either way not a cheap job and involves lots of man hours let along the required parts.......maybe time to start ringing around for s secondhand engine from an accident write off........
 
hi all, thanks for your help and comments, i have today attempted to sort out the boxes of bits i have been left, i agree that they had to strip it down to diagnose it but there are bits all over the place, i have found a couple of companies who can strip and rebuild my engine which i would prefer, but if it was me i woudl of wanted the engine whole so that i could take it apart methodically, not this mess, i am not sure if i should get a manual and just rebuild it in my own time, so at least i can hand it over, unless anyone knows of a retired expert or can get hold of an engine manual for me helpppppp, i will post some pics if anyone know how i can do this
