Creaking Centre Console

This is a new entry at number one in my quest to make a noise free cabin!

Anybody suffer from this and if so any tips on making it go away? I had a screw missing on the drivers side under the dash but it seems to be more creaky with this replaced! [&:]

Does it go away of you put your finger on the black plastic trim above the radio?
If yes it seems to be a common trait on later dash cars.

I will try that tomorrow to see if it goes away with pressure above the radio. I assume your just stuck with it being the case?

Well, on either of my 944s sometimes it's noisy, sometimes it isn't, sometimes it goes away after pressing the black plastic trim, sometimes it doesn't.
Bit of black magic to me!

I'm no expert, but my thoughts would be that it's got to be two parts of something rubbing together that makes a noise.

So, first you need to find what two parts are rubbing, hence pushing different areas to see what changes the noise. Then, you need to either tighten the two bits so they don't move, or lubricate them so the movement doesn't make a noise.

Just read my previous post. Taken out of context it breaks every rule on the forum and sounds like a bad "Carry On" film! [&:]

I think the black plastic trim will be hard to quieten if it's guilty as it hooks over the top of the radio mount IIRC and only has 2 screws at the ashtray. May be wrong. There is also a plethora of wires underneath it for the centre console buttons and the alarm LED. I think I have speaker wires in there too that someone has added at some point as I can never get my ashtray flush because of them! []

I will start to fact find with it tomorrow and report back.

Steve - anytime! However, if you never eradicate any noises you won't have to work on each subsequent one that presents itself when a cure for one is found! It is a cause of madness playing this game in a 944!

Hmmmm... how have your dogs been doing lately?

Had the same noise : take out storage box in centre + radio/cd, check tightness of all screws visible, & put back together - hopefully your noise will go.

Ok, I have had a play about with this now. There are 2 x 13mm bolts under the oddment tray that hold the console bracket to the transmission tunnel. I got about a full turn on both of them but it made no difference. The screws holding the console itself are all nicely tightened. The noise is the button panel creaking. If I put pressure on this panel downwards at the buttons the noise diminishes. It's not particularly well designed, only 2 screws where it meets the ashtray, the rest just hooks over the radio slot and has the gear gaitor clipped in the middle. Does it connect elsewhere or is that it?

Whilst I was in however I did find a chunk of redundant alarm wiring loom which I have removed (was connected to the blank switch but going nowhere, I thought this was to toggle the interior alarm sensors?) and also re-routed the offending speaker cables so my ashtray now sits flush. [:D]

I think to fix this properly I will have to put something in between the transmission tunnel and the button panel. Not entirely sure though. I can't help thinking they must all creak with the way they are fastened on?
