creaking noise from front suspension

Hi folks - recently got a 1998 996 C2 which I'm very happy with..this is my first post - hopefully one of the few that relate to a problem. I've noticed a creaking noise from the front nearside - when the car is travelling slowly over uneven ground (probably there at higher speeds but inaudible!)..and when stationary if I turn the steering wheel. The garage that sold it to me has advised it's caused by wear to a bush (?) - I think part of the track rod. Has anyone experienced this? If the diagnosis is correct, is rectification a big job? Would it be sensible to get both sides fixed at the same time?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome Denys!

Unfortunately, it's a very common problem. From the noise you describe it is most likely to be the ball joint of the lower wishbone. The joint isn't available as a separate part, so you have to replace the whole wishbone. Cost is £222.09 inc VAT, and less than an hour to change.

I have had the same problem for some time with a C4 - previously reported here. Noise is quite loud and usually over uneven ground - cobbled especially - and occasionally when suspension compressed under braking. No play has ever been detected at service or MOT time and vehicle behaves impeccably. Bottom wishbone - the prime suspect I was told - was replaced but made no difference - so too top mounts and then drop links. Am now told it may be the strut. Local Porsche Centre were of no assistance in diagnosis at any time and so far has been quite an earner for my local independent with no benefit to me!

Thanks DJ! My car came with fresh MOT, hence I assume no safety issue.. ..your posting rang a bell - the local OPC checked the car over prior to my purchase and noted "noise on strut top bearings" with a quote of £242 for parts + 5.8 hours labour = just short of £1,000 (including wheel alignment).. ..maybe I'll take the car to an indy that has a good reputation..

The strut top bearings are only about £25 each - I've just fitted two to my car. They usually rattle/clonk., rather than creak, as do the drop links and control arms.

Becoming clear it helps to have a trained ear - maybe we could have sound clips on the site to help diagnosis ) My car's noise certainly more of a creaky squeak - and I can 'play it' by pushing the wing down when the car is parked - would that also be the case with the other components? ..must say, I'm very impressed with the usefullness of this forum - thanks again guys!

I get a slight creaking noise from the offside rear suspension at low speed. When my car went to Camtune (Porsche Byfleet) recently I got them to listen to it while I was there so I could replicated it. I was told it was nothing to worry about and to wait until it got worse which would make diagnosis easier. Anyone had this creaking at the rear?

Yes - the exact same wishbone is used on front and rear. I had to change the rear offside one on my Turbo just after I bought it last year.

Richard - is this the part?

I think I've answered my on question wrt powerflex bushes. (No, as it is the ball joint that goes)
