Creaking noise from storage lid in centre console

I have a 981 Boxster S.

The lid of the storage compartment in the centre console makes creaking noises when it is closed and pressure is then applied to it. This is annoying as I often rest my elbow on the centre console when driving, and this results in a cheap, creaky noise.

Porsche have said this creaking isn't covered by my extended warranty and I would have to pay to have this fixed (unsure why!).

I tried tightening the screws underneath the lid but this doesn't help. I note there are some small rubber feet at the bottom of the lid, presumably to dampen noise and to prevent a loud slam of the lid. I have placed a piece of folded up paper between the rubber feet of the lid and the centre console and it considerably reduces the creaking, but obviously this is not a long term solution!

1. Is Porsche correct? Should this be covered by the extended warranty?

2. Any suggestions on how to fix myself?

Thanks in advance!

Not sure about the warranty situation.
You could try spraying the lid with some silicone lubricant.
Failing that don't rest your arm on the lid when driving as this is a not a good driving habit and restricts the control you have of the steering!

It is not designed to have pressure applied to it so a silicone lubricant is the best option but may only lessen the noise.

Elliot,

Although your problem would have been covered by the original factory warranty, I'm pretty sure that trim items are excluded from the extended warranty. You need to have a look at the exact wording of the warranty document but if the PC are saying that it's not covered then I'm sure that's the case.

Hope you get that annoying problem fixed.

Jeff

You could try some small pieces of sticky backed window draught excluder strategically placed on the underside of the lid.

This is the stuff I am thinking about.

It is probably available in different colours but it won't show when lid is closed.

Cheers,

That foam stuff works (I had some spare stuff from some DIY a while back)! It cuts down the squeaking by about 75% and only heavier pressure on the centre console now causes the noise. Light elbow resting doesn't any more.

Good call Fred!

Still, ordered the silicone lubricant and may replace the foam stuff, which looks like it may fall off after a while, with the lube and see if that is any better.
