Creaking Steering when manoeuvring

Anyone else have this or know of a TSB?

Problem has been evident since new but has recently been getting worse. Can't imagine therefore it's anything that has dried out (?)

I might be sounding like a stuck record here, but could it be the creaking front suspension bush that is a common trick on the 996. Theres a large number of recent threads on it. I imagine turning the wheels is applying force to the rubber suspension joint and causing the creak??

Just a thought.

Neil

Thanks for the reply Neil, although the creaking seems to be eminating from inside the steering column; it is hardly audible from outside the car.

No creaking when the suspension is bounced.

Sounds like strut tops to me. The tops have a bearing in them that allows the top mount to turn with the steering. They're always failing (low quality plastic parts - not sure if they might have changed the spec now though) but aren't mad expensive to replace. Remember you MUST have a full geometry alignment (camber, toe etc.) when you replace the strut tops - removing the old ones completely changes all the settings. This this does add significantly to the cost of the job.
